Christian fundraisers make disciples. They don’t make donors. Donors can be viewed as a “means to an end.” And if we’re not careful, that’s all they’ll ever be to us. We will thereby put limits not just on who they are, but on how meaningful their relationship with our mission can be. But approaching donors as disciples who, like me, need to be “equipped and encouraged into every good work” changes the work from tactics to ministry, from simple strategy to an expression of God’s lovingkindness. Many people can give you a fundraising strategy, and many more know how to pull the strings to get a gift. But those practices can’t reveal the Kingdom of God. Treating donors as people made in their Creator’s image, with a unique, ordained role to play in His plan, demands that we elevate our practices and our relationships. As you reach out to people who support your cause today, remember that they need your grace, your ministry, your prayers, and your encouragement. They hurt, just like you. They hope, just like you.
