Our second phase of Climate Resilient Honiara project, funded by UNFCCC, administered by UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), and led by Darryn McEvoy, is all about implementation of identified priority projects. Our applied research has identified a lot of needs, especially among those living in #urban #informalsettlements in Honiara, the capital city of Solomon Islands. They include access to basic rights (e.g. clean drinking water, adequate housing, access to toilets, drainage, education and playground). My question to you is whether meeting basic human rights should be a pre-requisite to climate resiliency? Isn’t it a matter of #justice? Often funding for development projects and climate resilience projects are separate. Isn’t there a need for integration in aid/ donor funding? . . . . #climate #climateresilience #disaster #DisasterResilience #Housing #Humanrights #Honiara, #SolomonIslands, #GenderRights, Darryn McEvoy, Usha Iyer-Raniga, RMIT Centre for Urban Research, UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), Habitat for Humanity Australia.

With 1.1 billion people currently living in informal settlements and an additional 2 billion expected in the next 30 years, the challenges of rapid urbanization are urgent. This reality is particularly pronounced in developing countries, where the swift expansion of cities exacerbates inequalities and urban poverty. In Africa alone, two-thirds of the infrastructure needed by 2050 is yet to be built. Moreover, the construction sector accounts for 37% of global energy-related CO2 emissions. So, how can improving the living conditions of urban impoverished communities align with addressing global crises? We are kicking off a global peer-learning webinar series with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Cities Alliance, focusing on practical approaches to just and sustainable urban planning, construction, and financing. Supported by #ICLEI and other partners, this series empowers local actors for socially just and climate-friendly urban transformation while engaging subnational governments in global development and climate agendas. Join us for the first webinar, which explores strategies for resilient and inclusive cities by fostering sustainable construction in informal urban areas: 📅 21 March 🕑 14:00-15:30 GMT+1 🔗https://lnkd.in/dTAXfJ_m 📝 English + written translation in French and Spanish available. The first line of defense for people against climate hazards and disasters is resilient housing integrated with essential infrastructure and services (i.e., water, sanitation, energy, and access to transport to reach jobs, healthcare and education or to get out of harm's way). THE REHOUSE (Resilient, Equitable Housing, Opportunities and Urban Services) agenda focuses on well-serviced, well-connected, climate resilient housing for communities that live in urban informal settlements, representing about 2 out of 3 urban dwellers in low-income countries and well over a billion people worldwide. So many innovative solutions exist, yet the financing and scale of implementation remains woefully small. Sharing a powerful article by my team highlighting the hardships faced by communities living in informal settlements, the transformative solutions that exist today, and how to scale them through partnerships like REHOUSE to achieve climate justice and development goals. Climate action must start with housing and urban services. Yet housing is rarely discussed in international climate forums and informal settlements are often completely ignored. The REHOUSE (Resilient, Equitable Housing Opportunities and Urban Services) partnership aims to accelerate progress towards more equitable and climate-smart cities through resilient and affordable housing and basic services.
