Throwback to the EU Greening Cities Partnership meeting that took place two weeks ago. Significant progress was made in the realm of urban greening as the Partnership convened in Utrecht to finalize their Action Plan for submission to the Directors General on Urban Matters. This partnership, comprising over 20 public authorities, aims to assist cities in meeting the targets outlined in the EU's Nature Restoration Regulation. By doing so, the partnership seeks to promote collaboration and innovation within urban ecosystems. I've expanded a recent Irish Times feature on building a climate-just city in my Medium climate solutions blog, and added in reference hyperlinks for those who want to go further and if you are interested in knowing more about the research ideas and work do get in touch?. As a follow-up to the research and Irish Times piece I've been invited to speak at the Irish Council for Social Housing conference in Sligo on October 17th, on the theme of #housing for communities over commodities, and will connect that conversation with some of the climate resilient and just, sustainable models we can see working in other European cities, and where energy retrofitting has been prioritised for the poorest and most vulnerable using low-carbon materials. We can learn from collaborations with neighbouring countries and cities, learn from their mistakes as well as their successes, but also shift from a silo-thinking, disjointed approach to connected, coordinated systems-based planning designed to meet the needs of people, places and species. How can we prepare cities for extreme weather while making sure every community is treated fairly? Our annual conference brings together built environment experts to find collaborative solutions for London. When London’s temperature hit 40°C for the first time, it sent a stark warning that the city must urgently develop greater climate resilience. The point was underlined by the London Climate Resilience Review commissioned by the Mayor of London. “A regional delivery plan for climate resilience in London must be created collaboratively,” recommends the final report, published in July. As London’s independent network for the built environment, our conference will bring together sector stakeholders to understand the implications of the climate resilience review and consider new ways to address these challenges. *** Climate Resilience and Equity *** Tuesday 8 October in central London. As the general elections approach, the Landscape Institute has published vital recommendations for the next UK government. The Institute urges the next UK government to tackle the polycrisis the UK is facing through an integrated policy agenda that champions landscape-led and nature-based approaches. EDLA joins the LI in the call for solutions to the climate, nature restoration, public health, and housing challenges through interconnected policies that deliver positive social, environmental, and economic value to our country. Through advocacy, policy development, technical assistance, and capacity-building initiatives, UN-HABITAT supports governments, local authorities, and communities in improving housing conditions, urban planning, infrastructure, and access to basic services. The agency also emphasizes the importance of addressing issues such as slum upgrading, land tenure security, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk reduction to create equitable and livable urban environments. UN-HABITAT plays a crucial role in advancing the urban agenda and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to cities and human settlements.
