This past weekend was the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction, but the opportunity to take action is ongoing. Food retailers can still make a significant impact by adopting these strategies: Key actions: - Boost food donations by creating a clear list for employees to help divert perishables past labeled dates (e.g., seafood diverted within 2 days of Use By date, milk donated within 5 days of Sell By date). - Increase food waste diversion by ensuring each department has easy access to organic waste collection bins. - Forge local partnerships with food banks, shelters, farms, and bioenergy facilities to keep food waste out of landfills. Food waste/ Surplus from supermarkets. There are some great ways this food is shared through to communities from supermarkets like FareShare UK and Neighbourly. it prevents waste, and feeds people. Through our daily collections we feed a huge number of people via the waterside food project. But I worry there is not enough support for the small charities and community groups who also collect to deal with what's left when the food has been shared out. The use by that no one wants, or can't reach people unless you can hand out at night ( we can), or can't be frozen. What is happening to that food? How do we prevent that part of the waste? I am super lucky we have the space to compost, and access to woodchip. This (not brilliant ) video is of my latest compost bin. it is a hot composting method, so I can compost meats and dairy. After 3 to four weeks depending on the weather temperatures it will be broken down to a compost, it then will be moved to our maturing bins to be gone through by worms and to grow mycelium. In the spring it will be used to grow more food. For those who don't have the space or time, how can we create a network of composters to go with food collectors to take waste prevention even further ? #foodwaste #supermarkets #compost #livingsoils

🌍 World Food Day: A Moment for Reflection and Action On October 16th, we observe World Food Day, raising awareness about global hunger and food sustainability. In 2023, between 713 million and 757 million people faced hunger, and over 2.8 billion people couldn’t afford a healthy diet in 2022. Even in the EU, many struggle with the rising cost of food. At the same time, food waste remains a pressing issue—132 kg of edible food per person was wasted in the EU last year. To combat this, the EU is working toward ambitious targets to reduce food waste and promote food donations. 🫵 What can each of us do? We can make small changes: reduce food waste at home, donate to local food banks, and choose sustainable food options. Together, we can make a difference! 🔗 Check out infographic to learn more. https://lnkd.in/eTprAtrA #WorldFoodDay #Sustainability #ZeroHunger #FoodWaste #TakeAction

🌍Californians send 11.2 billion pounds of food to landfills each year. Food waste contributes to more than half of methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. Meanwhile, too many in our community struggle to afford healthy food. 🌍BFN is the largest Food Recovery Organization (FRO) in Northern Alameda County, each year diverting hundreds of tons of edible, surplus food to neighbors in need while saving the equivalent of 80 years of electricity consumption for one household! 🌍Food recovery is an important initiative that simultaneously addresses food security and climate change. However, the costs associated with sorting and waste hauling the unusable donations can be unsustainable for FROs, often lean nonprofits. 🌍In an effort to change that, we recently partnered with StopWaste and Cascadia Consulting Group to analyze the compost and waste at BFN. Follow the link below to see how this unique compost audit project could yield more support for food recovery efforts in our community. https://ow.ly/nyKY50RkhtU #earthday #foodrecovery
