CHOOSING A NAME FOR OUR NEWBORN: PSV HAFNIUM 👶⚛️ While many parents often struggle to find and agree on a name for their newborn, the name for #Hafnium came to us quite naturally —and felt like a discovery process rather than a tug-of-war over naming. The MYRRHA project is set to become the world’s first subcritical lead-bismuth cooled reactor driven by a linear particle accelerator, with part of its beam directed to the ISOL facility for radioactive ion beam production. This research focuses on developing and optimising a surface ion source for ISOL@MYRRHA, a key component for ensuring efficient ionisation under the challenging conditions of high-energy proton beams. Sophie investigated surface ionisation principles, including material interactions and plasma sheath effects, with a focus on improving the heating system using Ohmic heating and an innovative active thermal screen to mitigate cold spots. Different designs were explored, leading to the successful construction and testing of a prototype at CERN. 🗞 During the last Cooperative Severe Accident Research Programme (CSARP) meeting at Bethesda - USA from 3rd to 7th June, CIEMAT’s team in the AMHYCO project presented their progress on the assessment of H2/CO flammability under severe accident sequences with MELCOR 2.2. 🔬 The containment model, developed and agreed upon by AMHYCO partners, revealed key insights: > PARs Effectiveness: Passive catalytic recombiners (PARs) significantly reduce flammability but do not prevent mixtures from entering the flammable region during certain phases of an accident. > Safety Systems Interaction: CIEMAT's modeling showed no threats to PAR performance from interactions with other safety systems. > Cooling Systems Variability: Minimal differences observed due to the variability in the onset of cooling systems.
