Check out some great takeaways from last week's Infrastructure Conference below!
Just leaving Washington DC after a great conference hosted by BuiltWorlds at the beautiful National Buildings Museum. I enjoyed serving on a panel with Dareen Salama of Gryps and Weston Tanner of VIATechnik, moderated by Stephen Anderson. A few interesting quotes to share from speakers: "Our industry must lean into complex problems...which means simplicity in solutions is paramount" (John Dionisio of Global Infrastructure Solutions Inc.) "New contech solutions that get acceptance show immediate benefits. No one in the field wants to hear about benefits that will come 6 months from now" (Clay Greene of Garney Construction) "Human error is still a large challenge and offers much opportunity for improvement" (Josh Edwards of WINT)

Check the recent article titled "Supporting a Community at Asteri Ithaca" by Cody Gibbens, PE, STAND Structural Engineering Inc., in the STRUCTURE Magazine to learn about using lightweight concrete for the construction of tower floors. "On the south shore of #Cayuga Lake lies the city of #Ithaca, New York. The home of Cornell University, this city faces the best of times—a high quality of living and steady growth. With this growth comes a need for more parking, more meeting spaces, more amenities, more housing, and like many cities across the nation, more affordable housing. With these challenges in mind, BW Architecture & Engineering, LLC partnered with the City of #Ithaca to develop a three-phase project which consisted of adding affordable housing to the area, the construction of a new conference center, and the renovation of the existing Green Street Parking Garage." https://lnkd.in/eWHMJjVr #lightweight #concrete

📝 Case Study: Planning permission secured for Sussex and Surrey Institute of Technology (SSIoT) Our Gatwick-based planning team was appointed by Chichester College Group to secure planning permission for a brand-new education facility south of Crawley College campus. The £15 million Sussex and Surrey Institute of Technology (SSIoT) is designed to provide high-quality learning environments housing specialist construction, engineering and digital ‘learning factories’. The designs embraced renewable energy technology and water harnessing and recycling systems to reduce energy consumption and wastage. Planning partner, Suzanne Holloway collaborated with key stakeholders on the design to ensure swift approval – from our client and the architects, to the local planning authority. Having addressed water neutrality challenges to deliver an efficient and sustainable development, planning approval was achieved. Construction is already underway and the centre is due to open to students in Autumn 2025. "We are indebted to Suzanne Holloway and the team at Vail Williams for getting this vital development across the line. This new building will give us more opportunities to educate and train people to address the skills shortages in the engineering, construction and IT industries." Something not many people know... The Scottish were once renowned for having the world's best stonemasons, capable of carrying out any task no matter the difficulty. So much so that in 1794, our ancestors were given the monumental task of constructing one of the most important buildings in the world. Read the article below about how Scots built the White House. https://lnkd.in/evRuxFTA

PDX Airport’s New 9 Acre Wood Roof….As if It Were Grown There | Jacob Dunn Imagine a building that not only enhances its environment — but looks like it grew there! Sounds like something from a fantasy movie? Not anymore. Jacob Dunn, a visionary in sustainability-focused architecture, shares the transformative story behind the redesign of PDX Airport's new main terminal, featuring a 9-acre mass timber roof, forest-like shading, and an array of living trees. This project is not just a renovation — it's a reimagining of how buildings interact with their natural surroundings and impact their local and regional ecosystems. Through unprecedented transparency in sourcing from native and small-holder properties, every piece of wood used is traceable back to its origin, showcasing a profound level of accountability and connection to the land. Jacob emphasizes that this level of detail and dedication to sustainability isn't reserved for monumental projects like airports. He’s inspiring and equipping architects and builders everywhere, regardless of project size, to adopt similar practices. This initiative is about making sustainable, traceable sourcing the norm, not the exception, in how we build. Explore how the PDX renovation project is crafting a future where architecture and nature exist in harmony. 🔗 Watch the full talk now on YouTube https://lnkd.in/gntDmdpn Let us know your key takeaways from Jacob's talk in the comments below.
