Modern slavery doesn’t stop at Christmas. It’s happening now and it’s happening in our North West communities. It can affect all men, women and children but would you know the signs? Some include: • Physical appearance. Do they seem malnourished or unkept? Anxious or agitated? • Isolated. Do they seem to be under control or influence of others? Appear unfamiliar with their neighbourhood or where they work? Help fight #ModernSlavery Report concerns to the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700 or ring the police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Consider the following scenario: You and your spouse are out to dinner, and your kids are at home with the babysitter. On your way home, you get into a car accident. When you fail to make it home on time, the babysitter calls you repeatedly, but when no one answers, she calls the police. The police arrive and find your kids with the babysitter, who offers to stay with the children until a relative can be found to take them. But because the babysitter doesn’t have the legal authority to care for the children—even temporarily—the police have no choice but to call Child Protective Services. These authorities will take your children into custody until they can locate and/or appoint the proper guardian. Every person has the right to live a life with dignity. No one has the right to strip that away. I just spent 150 minutes on an aeroplane commuting home. A plane of humans each with a story to tell, a plane that had perpetrators, a plane that had victims & survivors and a plane that had people touched by death as a result of family domestic violence or gender based violence. In that 150 minutes, according to this article, Victoria Police would have received 25 calls. 8 arrests are likely to have also been made. I’m a very analytical person and reading statistics like this angers me when I put it into the context of my commute home today. We need to do better, we need to say NO to violence, we need to support the bredth services that are the lifeline for many. In 2015, the first Royal Commsiion into Domestic Violence took place. In January 2023, the Victorian Government announced the implementation of the final recommendations, meeting their commitment to implement all 227 recommendations. Yet today, we are facing these statistics.

The For Baby's Sake Trust reveals that over 185,000 babies are present at police callouts for domestic abuse incidents annually in England, based on FOI data from 15 police forces. With 13% of domestic abuse incidents involving infants, this underscores the urgent need for a nationwide, whole-family response that recognizes babies and children as victims. The Trust calls for systemic, multi-agency strategies, trauma-informed practices, and government investment in early years services to break the cycle of abuse and support vulnerable families. The rise in domestic abuse highlights the critical need for coordinated action. #DomesticAbuse #ChildVictims #TraumaInformed #BreakTheCycle #ECPSafeguarding

🔸 As we near the end of #16Days, we reflect on a harsh truth: mothers and children who have separated themselves from their abuser are #StillNotSafe. Through child contact proceedings, abusers can continue to control, threaten, and harm families 💔, while Scotland’s courts and Children’s Hearing System too often enable this abuse ⚖️. The gap between criminal and civil courts, poor risk reflection in social work and police reports, and a bias towards contact leave survivors vulnerable, even as research shows the harm this causes. Scotland can, and must, do better. It's time to reform our systems, protect children, and truly prioritise the safety of survivors. #StillNotSafe #16Days #ReformChildContact #ProtectSurvivors #MakeThemSafe

We really need to listen to victims. How many times do we hear, “The child’s voice is at the centre…Lessons will be learnt.” However, nothing seems to change. Why? Charges, convictions for crimes of sexual violence are <1%. What message does this send? These people are incredibly brave for speaking out, but how many more must suffer? We need urgent reform of the criminal justice system. It’s not fit for purpose. So many people suffer/suffering and we need change. Furthermore, we need urgent reform for schools, social workers, medical staff. We need a system which isn’t reliant on the Police/CPS deciding - there needs to be independent oversight, rigor and accountability. https://lnkd.in/etUZn8z3

Dealing with family drama is never easy, but when it involves the safety of a child, it's heartbreaking. Leaving my nephew home alone to cry behind a couch while his mother, a social worker, handles court matters for a teenager? Unacceptable. Our priorities need a serious check. 💔👶 #FamilyFirst #ProtectOurChildren #Karma #UncalledFor #ChildSafety #FamilyDrama #SpeakUp" #FamilyFirst #ProtectOurChildren #Karma #UncalledFor #ChildSafety #FamilyDrama

"This government will use every lever at its disposal to support them [victims] while we pursue those who callously profit from their trauma and misery” These are certainly welcome words from Jess Phillips MP and Minister for Safeguarding. The commitment to recruit an extra 200 staff at the Home Office to tackle the backlog of tens of thousands of #modernslavery cases brings hope this Anti-Slavery Day. This move could help significantly reduce the period of limbo that survivors are currently left in which only causes them more trauma and suffering. However, we still need more... We need more training for statutory and frontline services to spot the signs and make referrals. We need to see stronger police investigations. We need more legal and trauma-informed support to be made available to survivors to speed up decision making and ensure they are safe and protected throughout their journey to recovery. We need more survivors to receive the justice they deserve. But there's hope! https://lnkd.in/e28UZpSz

We all have a responsibility to protect the children. There is a worrying trend of increased cases of Violence Against Children, and it's time to ask ourselves what can be done. ✍ A multisectoral approach is important to ensure that all sectors have a key role in raising their voices 👌. ✍ Increased #communityEngagement ✍ Put up preventive measures to prevent violence from occurring ✍ Early detection of #VAC and prompt referral #EndGBV #ProtectTheChildren #SpeakUp #EndChildViolence #EndFGM
