The For Baby's Sake Trust reveals that over 185,000 babies are present at police callouts for domestic abuse incidents annually in England, based on FOI data from 15 police forces. With 13% of domestic abuse incidents involving infants, this underscores the urgent need for a nationwide, whole-family response that recognizes babies and children as victims. The Trust calls for systemic, multi-agency strategies, trauma-informed practices, and government investment in early years services to break the cycle of abuse and support vulnerable families. The rise in domestic abuse highlights the critical need for coordinated action. #DomesticAbuse #ChildVictims #TraumaInformed #BreakTheCycle #ECPSafeguarding

The Local Government Association’s (LGA) recent report, Our Vision for Children, Young People and Families, highlights a critical issue in children’s social care: the prevalence of domestic abuse within #family settings. According to the report, concerns about domestic abuse were identified in 160,600 assessments (31.7% of those with factors identified) in 2023/24, while children were directly identified as victims in 55,040 assessments (10.9%). These figures are a stark reminder of the challenges we face in #safeguarding children. However, they also expose significant gaps in how we conceptualise, record the impact of domestic abuse on #babies and #children and develop our practice. The experience of domestic and family violence can affect so many aspects of a victim/survivor’s life, including their physical health and safety, mental health, housing, employment and financial stability. We strongly support the Missing and murdered First Nations women and children inquiry's recommendations, especially for the government to develop a sustainable #funding mechanism for ongoing support services for First Nations people experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence. https://lnkd.in/gNSWP9VQ #FirstNations #HealthJustice

📢 "Family court judges are in desperate need of domestic abuse training. Without it, they will continue to be part of ongoing abuse by allowing perpetrators to drag survivors through the courts and ordering contact at all costs." - Survivor, supported by Halo Project. Urgent reforms to the family court system are needed to ensure the safety of survivors and their children. Family courts often retraumatise survivors and judges and magistrates often lack a proper understanding of domestic abuse, placing women and children at risk. This is felt especially sharply by the most marginalised victims and survivors, black and minoritised women, who already face additional barriers within these systems. Join us in advocating for change and support our mission to protect survivors and educate professionals. #FamilyCourtReform #SupportSurvivors

This is a statistic that should shock everyone. 1 in 5 children are victims of domestic abuse and all of the trauma and long term impacts that this brings. In effect, for every classroom, this will be 6 children on average. These are the impacts found in a review into safeguarding and domestic abuse: (https://lnkd.in/e9Bkw5Ng) Pre-birth and babies: nearly all these cases involved death or serious injury to the child through deliberate harm/physical abuse or accidental harm (for example, through co-sleeping). Pre-school age: impacts were similar to those concerning babies, but this sample also included cases of non-fatal neglect. Primary school age: co-occurring issues included sexual abuse of the child by family members, and the child demonstrating communication and learning difficulties. Adolescents: five cases involved the child taking their own life. Co-occurring issues included gang involvement, knife crime, criminal exploitation, sexual abuse and exploitation, teenage pregnancy, child/adolescent to parent violence, including one case of murder We have to act to protect children as well as the adult victim #16daysofActivism #VAWG
Day 4: 20% of children in the UK have lived with an adult perpetrating domestic abuse. Imagine being brought up fearing for your own life as well as your parents, and wondering whether you’ve caused the problem. Thats what 1 in 5 kids are experiencing in the UK. Children are now victims of domestic abuse in their own right and have been recognised in the latest DA Bill. Services such as Resolve, in Halton, support children as young as 5 who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse in the home. #whiteribbon2024 #domesticabuseawareness #domesticabuse #childabuse

Everyone deserves a life free from fear and violence. Unfortunately, in Australia, domestic and family abuse remains a significant issue. We know more than 40 per cent of Australian women killed by partners have visited an emergency room in the preceding two years. St Vincent’s Open Support provides safe-housing and a way forward for women and children escaping such abuse. With Open Support’s assistance, survivors gain a foundation for the future - one where they can live independently. #InternationalDayfortheEliminationofViolenceAgainstWomen
