Plenty of people bemoan the lack of labor in the trades, but not many are doing something about it. That sentiment can’t be said about Pam Stott, executive director of the Northeast Construction Trades Workforce Coalition (NCTWC) and fellow co-founder, Doug Ford, VP at Curtis Lumber. The 501c6 organization was formed late in 2023 but began as just a task force about seven years ago. The group arose from ongoing discussions held at Saratoga Builders Association meetings that always seemed to center on the biggest, most persistent issue each member faced: “How can we get more workers?” https://lnkd.in/gApj6t2F

Construction has benefitted from technology. But Is there something we can learn from our past? I think it’s interesting that one of the largest commercial office buildings, the Empire State Building, was completed in 1 year and 45 days. The grand opening on 2.4 million square feet was in May 1, 1931. A record then, and now. The building was in race to be tallest building in the world, and was nearly topped by the Chrysler Building. There are tons of interesting statistics. But what I find most interesting is how the builder, Starrett Bros., treated their workforce. Back in those days, and especially during the depression, it was not uncommon to treat workers like disposable slaves. Worksite safety was not a thing. Workers were not typically provided with lunchrooms or other facilities. Starrett Bros. realized that to achieve their goal of building the fastest and tallest building in the world, they would need to things differently. They paid their workforce twice the going rate. They provided on-site and on floor lunch and coffee facilities. They shut the site down on windy days with full pay. Was this the sole reason for their success? Most definitely not, but it was one important factor. To hear more, listen to Cautionary Tales with Tim Harford: Steel and Kindness: Clash of the Skyscrapers.

You don’t build a business. You build people, and they build the business. It's easy to think that construction is all about steel, concrete, and hard hats. But it's actually about the people who wear those hard hats. Every beam lifted, every wall raised, every foundation laid. It all starts with the folks who show up every day, ready to make it happen. So, taking care of our people isn’t just a line in the employee handbook. It’s the core of everything Robinson Brothers stands for. Because when our team knows they’re valued, they put that value right back into their work. And that’s what turns a job into a masterpiece. So the secret to building something great? It’s not a secret at all. It’s people. And when we invest there, everything else falls into place. #robinsonbrothers #construction #commercial

As we approach the halfway point in our constructions seasonal sector of operations it’s vital to ensure good worker morale is maintained and achieved. We often observe characteristic shifts in behavioural patterns throughout the season amongst our employees reflecting upon the stability of good morale. Implementing a positive mindset and attitude that encourages employees to be productive and persistent towards performance is essential heading into the second half of the construction season. This enables employees to engage with a positive mindset as we try to achieve the more efficient section of our season’s schedule. From the ground up is how an empire is built and then from the top down is how that empire survives. Holding everyone accountable for positive achievements on a daily basis is how we create and maintain that good morale. Together we stand, Together we grow and Together we accomplish!

Panelized construction can provide a variety of advantages to stick-built, but perhaps the most important is the safety it provides the employees. The construction process creates standardized workflows that encourage specialization and a complete understanding of employees' duties and surroundings, allowing fewer accidents. Here is how: A controlled environment leads to better quality work as well as safety More ergonomically sound for the workforce Fewer steps at site = Less risk on site Less workforce required at site = Less WCB cost Less workforce at site, less overall cost Each workstation has experts at what they do completing quality work safely and efficiently As each panel proceeds down the assembly line, each section of the process is inspected multiple times by experts #PanelizedConstruction #PrefabConstruction #Construction #Halifax #Dartmouth #Lunenburg #Sydney #NovaScotia #Canada #HalifaxNoise #WeBuildCommunity #WeBuildSolid

Last week ended on a high note. The discussion around the Net Zero agenda and the urgent need for comprehensive training in Modern methods of construction feels like a huge step forward. As a company, we’re fully committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainable construction. Collaboration and support from like minded companies/individuals and local authorities are essential if we are going to equip the current and next generation with the right skills to deliver affordable, sustainable housing that’s so urgently needed. Looking forward to continuing these important discussions #modernmethods #netzero #sustainablehousing #affordablehousing #icf #construction #training
We had a productive end to last week with a visit from Alex Sobel MP at the Forging Futures Campus at Kirkstall Forge. It was a great opportunity for our Co-Founder and Construction Director, Alex Morris, and our Commercial Director, Elliot McKendrick, to join Ewan Metcalf from the Green Skills Campus, Antonia Martin-Wright and Lucinda Yeadon from CEG:, Michael Gration and Archie Skipsey from Five Rise Contractors, as well as previous course attendees Ellie Turner and Rohit Radhakrishnan. Together, we discussed important topics like the Net Zero agenda, the need for training in Modern Methods of Construction (#MMC), and ensuring funding for the next generation of construction workers. Support from local authorities is vital for driving forward these initiatives and addressing the pressing demand for sustainable and affordable housing. We’re excited about the future and look forward to continuing these essential conversations. #ModernMethods #Construction #NetZero #Education #Training #AffordableHousing #SustainableHousing #ICF #HousingCrisis
