Great news! Did you see that the US Army Corps of Engineers plans on incorporating more nature-based solutions to their civil works projects? 🌲 We're hoping this decision will not only benefit surrounding communities but also help combat the effects of climate change. Learn more from the American Society of Landscape Architects below! 👇 #architecture #nature #greenspace #climatechange
“This is tremendously encouraging,” said Aida Curtis, FASLA, co-founder of Curtis + Rogers Design Studio. In a new memo, the US Army Corps of Engineers announced it will expand the use of nature-based solutions in its civil works projects. “Coming from someone that started their career as a landscape architect at the Army Corps, this is huge,” said Pamela Conrad, ASLA, founder of Climate Positive Design and ASLA’s inaugural Biodiversity and Climate Action Fellow. Mare Island was the first U.S. naval base on the West Coast, and its contributions were monumental, particularly during World War II. The shipyard was a cornerstone of our defense efforts, producing and repairing countless vessels that were essential to the war effort. Walking through the area, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of admiration for the craftsmanship and dedication that went into every ship and submarine built here. One of the most inspiring aspects of Mare Island's history is the significant impact that women had during the war and beyond. As many men went off to fight, women stepped into vital roles at the shipyard, becoming welders, electricians, and riveters—roles traditionally held by men. These women, often referred to as "Wendy the Welders," not only helped keep the production lines moving but also paved the way for future generations of women in the workforce. I also had the valued opportunity to meet Jean Cherie, a career sculptor known for his incredible works, including the "Mother and Child" sculpture in Vallejo. Jean is currently collaborating with the City of Vallejo to place a "Wendy the Welder" statue at the forefront of Mare Island. This sculpture will epitomize the heroic contributions women made during the war efforts, serving as a powerful symbol of their strength and resilience. As we honor the legacy of these pioneering women, it's also crucial that we continue to support future women welders, shipbuilders, and innovators. By encouraging and empowering young women to pursue careers in these fields, we can ensure that the spirit of ingenuity and determination continues to thrive. We also need to support women like Jean, who want to preserve history and remind young women today what women are capable of and how valuable they are. For more about Jean's work, visit www.jeancherie.com and Mare Island Art Studios. #MareIsland #History #WomenInWorkforce #WWII #Shipbuilding #Innovation #Inspiration #Legacy #SculptureArt #EmpowerWomen #SupportFutureInnovators

🌟 **Reflecting on a Decade of Advocacy and Change** 🌟 As I mark ten years with the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL), I reflect on both the challenges and triumphs of our shared journey as veterans. Recently, however, I've become increasingly concerned about issues of transparency and accountability within our organization. At the recent Dominion convention, I learned of serious allegations against an elected officer that were not disclosed to delegates. This situation raises critical questions about the RCL’s leadership and its commitment to fostering a safe environment for all members. It is imperative that we prioritize the well-being of our community, ensuring that the RCL remains a place where all veterans can feel supported and welcomed. Change is needed, not just for the organization’s future, but for the veterans it serves. I urge all my fellow veterans and supporters to engage in this conversation. Together, we can work towards a culture of openness, respect, and inclusivity within the RCL. Let’s honor the living by ensuring that our organization reflects the values we stand for. Yours in service, Amy Green #RoyalCanadianLegion #VeteranAdvocacy #Change #Leadership #Inclusivity

🪖November 13th marked the 42nd anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall. While visiting Arlington, Virginia to cover a story on the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC)’s Veterans Assistance Program, we had the opportunity to speak with Jan Scruggs, Founder and President Emeritus of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. He told us the idea to create what has become the most visited memorial in Washington, D.C., came out of his experiences as a wounded Veteran of the Vietnam War. He became an expert on PTSD and an advocate for Veterans nationwide, writing articles for the Washington Post and testifying before the United States Congress as part of his work. But he wanted to take it a step further. “I had this theory that if we were able to put in memorial up with the names of the casualties, this would help the Veterans who suffer from PTSD. What we would do would be to have the names up there, and people could touch the names... I put together the largest architectural design competition in the history of Western civilization, and this is what we got from it - the most visited memorial in Washington, D.C. Things that happen here are quite extraordinary. People come here to bring their children, their grandchildren, to touch the name of a distant relative, and it's a wonderful thing.” ➡️ Check out the video here, and then visit the ElevatorInfo blog to learn more about how the IUEC’s Veterans Assistance Program is supporting IUEC Veteran servicemembers and their families. https://lnkd.in/dq8sjred #IUECVAP #IUECVeterans #HelmetsToHardhats #VeteranSupport #elevatorinfo #elevatorindustry #elevatorsafety #elevatortech #elevatormechanic #elevatormodernization #buildingowner #contractors #IUEC #NEIEP #buildingcontractors #buildingowners

A Bridge of Hope: Major Sita Shelke and the Engineer Regiment 🇮🇳 Can you imagine building a bridge in less than a day? That’s mind-blowing! ✨ Imagine being cut off from the world. No way in, no way out. This was the terrifying reality for the people of Wayanad. Floods had ravaged the landscape, leaving them stranded and isolated. A lifeline severed, hope dwindling. Can you feel the desperation of those isolated? The fear, the uncertainty? It's a nightmare scenario. But then, a beacon of hope emerged. Major Sita Shelke and her extraordinary team of engineers were their salvation.🪖 These weren't just soldiers; they were architects of resilience, their mission: to rebuild a broken world. Building a bridge is a monumental task, often taking weeks, even months. But these heroes redefined the impossible. Against the ticking clock, they transformed engineering into an art of urgency. With every passing hour, the stakes rose, and so did their determination. Their triumph is more than just a bridge; it's a symbol of human ingenuity and unwavering spirit. The moment that first foot stepped onto the newly constructed bridge, it wasn't just a physical connection restored; A collective sigh of relief, a surge of gratitude. Major Shelke and her team, you've shown us the true meaning of service. Your courage, your skill, your unwavering dedication are an inspiration. Let's celebrate these heroes. Let's share their story. Let's inspire others to rise to challenges with the same unwavering spirit. #IndianArmy #Engineers #Wayanad #Resilience #Humanity

WHAT DID YOU DO AT THE CORKSCREW I am really upset. In the effort to be social in free space, I began to travel yesterday to yoga park under the bridge where there's a market. I reached Corkscrew Park and could not ascend. It is blocked. I looked around. At first I didn't see any rationale. Then, I saw the orange and white block. And then I noted that a piece of the bridge itself, closer to BayWalk, was missed. I thought, "Well who is dismantling the Corkscrew Park bridge from RiverWalk to BayWalk?" Then I mulled over the the wisdom of riding around to reach the movie presentation using the streets. It's now after 8:00 pm. I don't feel like going around the other way. Easier to return to my residence. Forget the movie. This way is direct and succinct. I was dismayed and turned around. Wheelchair! I'm mad. This here is ungodly and unlawful. I don't see the need to have ever dismantled any part of this art creation and pedestrian love. By the way, that is a storied "tenement slum" in the background with the parking structure that sits atop the Times New Union Building land. There are many Marines that were disinterred there to erect this apartment and parking structure. This includes General Might 0,3. These are your care recommendations: 1. Turn this entire project over to the US military corps of engineers, architects and designers. 2. Deconstruct the apartment building. 3. Deconstruct the parking garage. 4. Complete a new architectural design inclusive of a place of internment and memorial for these indigenous righted persons and Marines 5. Include three discreet retail venues: one for books, and second for tea and a third for bourbon. 6. Reconstruct the US Route 1 Juncture building and BayWalk. 7. Repair the bridge. 8. Prosecute appropriately. 9. Accept cash for any reclamation. This public policy and urban planning moment brought to you today by Lorrinn Cassandra Woods. #Normandy #Marines #Navy #Army #AirForce #WhiteHouse
