Why a happy work environment is so important 😄 Work NA is one of the core pillars of our Employee Value Proposition (EVP). It recognises that sometimes it’s the little things that make the difference including having a fully stocked kitchen and an endless supply of refreshments. After all, a positive work culture isn’t just nice to have, it’s a necessity. 🙌 We achieve this by: 👉 Having a never-ending supply of tea and coffee If you’ve ever stopped by one of our offices you’ll know how much the team loves their hot drinks. Not to brag but we have really nice coffee and plenty of Yorkshire Tea (is there any other kind?). ☕ This simple gesture makes a big difference to the team’s morale and it’s never long before you hear someone saying ‘Does anyone want a drink?’ 😂 👉 Fancy a snack? Our kitchen is always fit to burst, and each of our meeting rooms has a selection of sweet treats - special mention to Estelle Parker who ensures our clients and team never go without! Whether it be fresh fruit, porridge, toast, or having one of our very own air fryer jacket potatoes or sausages sandwiches our offices have it. We recognise the difference small gestures can have - after all, no one wants to be hungry at work! 😋 👉 Our events calendar We always have a jam-packed events calendar with the day often ending with some drinks and lots of delicious food! Just look at our visit to Accountex last year which saw the team dine at Vero Moderno - if it’s good enough for Pep and Haaland then it’s good enough for #TeamNA right? 🍕 This year has also seen the introduction of our NA bake off which means the office is always full of cake on a Monday! I never really had a set lunchtime during college. I'd eat a snack when hungry or indulge in a meal when I had extra money. But when I entered the professional workforce, there was a set rhythm to the day that started with a quick coffee chat in the break room at 8 a.m., then a three-and-a-half-hour focused work push before nearly everyone in the office emptied onto the street looking for something to eat at noon. A social class system governed the office lunchtime ritual. Newbies like me ate at burger joints, hot dog stands, and sandwich shops, debating last night's game while dripping mustard on our ties. The secretarial pool and administrative staff packed smart, organized Tupperware lunches and sat in the park having delicious conversations. The managers went to swanky, hip restaurants for "power lunches" with the other movers and shakers. And the big wig bosses wore yacht-y-looking jackets to dine at the country club. Suffice it to say, there was much more to lunch than just filling the gullet. A natural social order of networking, hobnobbing, and socializing played out at all levels, forcing us to get out of the office to interact with others in our community. Today, people stare at their screens during lunch, getting enraged by politics or dreaming about a life they'd like to have while eating delivery food alone. Is this progress? I don't think so. We’ve opened our third venue last month. “You don’t build a business, you build the people, then people build the business” One of my favourite business quotes and why our employees are our most valuable asset 🫶 We’re up to a team of 17 now, which is just a crazy thought. Hospitality can be crazy, it’s known for high staff turnover, unhappy employees and unsocial hours. We have extremely low turnover of staff and happy employees… HOW? ⬇️ As wellbeing lead, I practice what I preach! ➡️ They have fun behind the bar. ➡️ No body works past midnight. ➡️ We have social events planned throughout the year for team bonding. ➡️ We don’t just hire anyone, we make sure they’re a good fit with the team and align with what we’re trying to achieve. ➡️ If things do get stressful (it’s hospitality, of course it does at times) we understand why, where it went wrong, and we do what we can to change it. ➡️ They take breaks, holidays, and if something comes up with their kids, these things happen… we’ll do what we can to find them cover! ➡️ We’re present! The concept of Sunday Dinner is so important, in both life and work. I try to make dinner for my family every Sunday. Usually, I pick something that takes a long time to make, not just because it tastes better, but because it forces me to be mindful during the cooking process. Also, there is something about the intentionality of a large meal that encourages everyone to talk. How did our week go? What are we planning next week? How are we feeling about life in general? At the end, we all end up feeling closer as a family and prepared for the future At work, we aren’t necessarily sitting down to beef bourguignon or crawfish etouffee every week with our colleagues. However, there are other ways to bring the underlying principle of Sunday Dinner to the workplace. Maybe it’s through alignment or catch-up meetings. But regardless of method, it is important to take the time. Be mindful and present. And before contract negotiations (yes, of course I have to mention contracts), take the time to have a sit down, in person or virtually, with all internal stakeholders for a chance to communicate and get a gauge on their concerns and hopes. Do people think free booze and samosas at the office are perks? They must be delusional about what keeps employees engaged! So, a friend was raving about her new job the other day, practically frothing at the mouth about the "amazing perks." She said her office provided free beer every Friday and unlimited chai and samosas every other day! I told her that free booze and artery-clogging snacks aren't impressive; they're insulting. My ideal work environment doesn't involve a sugar crash at 3 pm or needing a nap after "Casual Fridays." I want to be paid to deliver results, not to gain weight and develop a dependence on junk food. A good company should invest in creating a collaborative space with energetic minds, not a sugar-fueled haze. Focus on building a culture of productivity, not one of empty calories. The reward for my work must be my paycheck, not an order of cheese-burst pizza from Domino's. The best perk you can offer is the chance to see my work contribute to the company's growth and my own professional development. Everything else – the "free" food and "fun" activities – is just fluff. What truly motivates and retains top talent? It's the opportunity to do meaningful work, to be surrounded by bright minds, and to contribute to something bigger than ourselves. That's the recipe for a great work environment, not a bottomless basket of McDonalds burgers and fries. #OfficeLife #Perks #JustSayNo
