LISCO and Danieli sign MoU for innovative direct reduction plant This MoU represents a significant step toward enhancing iron and steel production capabilities in Libya. The collaboration between LISCO and Danieli promises technological advancements, economic growth, and sustainable development. The Libyan Iron and Steel Company (LISCO) recently signed a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the renowned Italian company Danieli. This strategic partnership aims to launch a project that will implement a direct reduction plant. The project involves the establishment of a direct reduction plant. The factory is expected to produce an impressive two million tons of sponge iron and hot-molded iron annually. Sponge iron and hot-molded iron are in high demand both locally within LISCO and globally. The project will be a joint venture between LISCO and Danieli, with the Italian company holding a majority stake of 51%, while LISCO retains 49%. Anticipating a swift return on investment, LISCO aims to recoup its capital within eight years following the completion of the implementation work, estimated to take three and a half years. Located within the premises of the Libyan Iron and Steel Company, the factory will leverage existing infrastructure and benefit from advanced storage, handling, and screening systems for raw materials. Central to its operations will be the utilization of Danieli's cutting-edge EnergIron technology, renowned for its competitiveness with the American Midrex technology. Danieli's involvement in the project underscores its longstanding partnership with LISCO, marked by successful collaborations in the past. Notably, Danieli has previously implemented steel bar factories with annual production capacities of 400 thousand tons and 800 thousand tons, in 1997 and 2018 respectively. Italian steelmaker Acciaierie d’Italia (ADI) and DRI d’Italia, a subsidiary of the state investment agency Invitalia, have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a direct reduction plant (DRI) at the Taranto site. According to the project, the new DRI plant will have a production capacity of 2.5 million tons per year. It will also include infrastructure for iron ore storage and transportation. However, the new construction is likely to require some adjustments to the structure of the existing production site. The costs of this, which are yet to be specified, will be covered by public funds in the amount of €1 billion. According to ADI, the memorandum of understanding is an important step towards decarbonization, which will be completed by the buyer of the complex. On October 15, 2024, Acciaierie d’Italia resumed operation of blast furnace No. 1 at its Taranto facility. As the company said in a statement the day before, this is an important step in ADI’s recovery plan and confirms the commitment of the special commissioners, the Italian government and the company to continue to restore production at the steel plant. 𝗥𝗶𝗼 𝗧𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗛𝘆 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 Rio Tinto has entered into definitive agreements with GravitHy, an early-stage industrial company, to help accelerate GravitHy’s steel decarbonisation project in France. As part of this #collaboration, Rio Tinto will supply high-grade direct reduction iron ore pellets from its Iron Ore Company of Canada (#IOC) operations to GravitHy’s planned operation, as well as manage the sales and marketing of ultra-low carbon Hot Briquetted Iron (#HBI) GravitHy produces. GravitHy's proposed two million tonnes per year #iron #production facility at Fos-sur-Mer, #France, is planned to be commissioned in 2028. The facility, which is located next to a deep seaport, will feature ultra-low carbon #hydrogen production #infrastructure, powered by existing grid-connected #nuclearpower, to process direct reduction #pellets into #HBI. Japanese steelmaker takes step towards no-coal steelmaking JFE Steel, in partnership with trading company Itochu, took a step towards building low-carbon iron supply chains between Japan and Brazil and the UAE. 🧨 Down with a blast: as old Nickel Smelter pipe crumbles Nornickel takes major dismantling project one step closer to completion The demolition of a 180-metre high factory chimney,  brought down as part of the ongoing process of clearing the industrial area once taken by  the decommissioned Nickel Smelter, was a sight to behold (see video for details). Chimney No. 4 of the calcination shop was blasted down, impressing the local residents, waving good-bye to yet another symbol of the Soviet industrial heritage in the Arctic city that is rebuilding to start a new chapter. The Nickel Smelter closure is part of a programme to improve and rebuild metallurgical capacities in Norilsk, Russia’s key Arctic industrial hub. Since the plant, located close to the residential area of Norilsk, shut its gates in 2015, sulphur dioxide emissions were down 30% making the air in Norilsk a lot better to breathe.  A major construction facility in itself, the chimney was made of steel and concrete and weighed a whopping 13,000 tonnes. The chimney operated for 36 years, removing the gaseous byproducts of sulphide calcination. 🌷 The waste from the dismantling process is disposed of without harming the environment. The reinforced concrete is transported to a site, where the steel bars are separated from the concrete. The bars are then cut and sold for scrap, and the remaining concrete is crushed. The resulting crushed stone mixture is used to fill  and level the territory. More than 1,600 employees of the Nickel Smelter relocated to work at our other facilities, with many receiving training to suit for new jobs. Employees close to retirement were included in the “Veteran of Metallurgical Production” programme and received benefit payments upon retirement. We spent an impressive 1.4 billion rubles on this social programme. #ESG #Arctic

We welcome the Australian Federal Industry Minister Ed Husic MP’s launch of a consultation process to help unlock green metals opportunities in Australia.   Accelerating the production of green iron is critical to reducing global emissions and understanding the barriers and opportunities to enable Australia to play a leading role in this sector is an important step forward.   The foundation for green iron and steel production is very low impurity magnetite concentrates. Currently, Australia does not produce magnetite concentrates that meet the specifications required for green iron technology ("HDRI-EAF"). On the 15th and 16th of May, a consortium meeting of TransZeroWaste was performed at the project partner ISQ, close to Lisbon in Portugal.   The results and progress in the different work packages of the project have been presented and discussed considering the key objectives Upgrading low-grade iron ore by combining it with iron-rich by-products; Development of innovative techniques to produce high- quality pre-material for decarbonised future production routes; separation of disturbing components from by- products to replace scrap; and finaly development of the technological basis and digital tools supporting the transition towards zero waste in the European #steel industry. All performed work is related to the objectives of the Clean Steel Partnership and taking the technological and time requirements of the European steel industry regarding the transition into account.
