It's Social Mobility Day and the theme this year is #ShareMoments So let's go back to a different millennium! November 1999 to be exact! There are lots of things going on, planning for 'millennium parties', checking technology over fear of the 'millennium bug' and a 21 year old lad from Bournemouth graduated from Solent University (Southampton Institute of Technology as it was then). Nothing remarkable about this, except that lad was the first in his family to go to university, grew up on a council estate, didn't have that role model to aspire to be like, or have a network of connections who could help to create opportunities along the way. As you've probably worked out already, that young lad was me. About to set out on who knew what path after university, except, there was a problem! I didn't know how to take that first step. Nobody had told me how to approach job applications, what a professional CV looked like, what to wear in interviews and how to conduct myself in a professional environment. I'm sure careers guidance was available at my university in 1999, but I didn't even know to go looking for it. Over 30 job interviews and rejections later, I finally landed a graduate job at Enterprise Mobility. I'd found an organisation that valued me, my skills and most importantly could see the potential that I had to offer and they took a chance on me. My background and lack of polish didn't matter. They could see the raw materials they were looking for, in the shape of a strong work ethic, people skills and a hunger; a drive and an ambition to achieve more than what others around me and if I'm honest, myself personally, thought would be possible. Fast forward 24 years and I am still with that company that took a chance on me! I have developed, I have progressed, I have achieved things and gone to places I never thought were possible. I have even climbed a rung or two up the social ladder! But it is important not to forget where you came from, what your values and personal drivers are. I still work incredibly hard, (possibly still trying to play catch up with others), people skills and knowing how to treat people 'right' are still just as important to me. Now, I am in a role where it is my job to find and support the future leaders of our business, as they begin their careers here at Enterprise. To be a mentor, to be a coach, to be a role model and to inspire the students that I meet on campus to follow in my footsteps and go beyond what I have achieved... and to be able to do all of that as my day job, I am truly proud and thankful! #IWork4EM

This Employer Directory is one of the projects that I am most proud of having developed over the past year, and which I think could easily be replicated at any Post-Secondary Institution to provide value to students. Realizing that many employers might not have the bandwidth to attend hiring events, and that many students (or jobseekers in general) are likely not aware of the diversity of employment opportunities that can be found across various organizations, I developed this online Employer Directory so that employers could passively promote their organization and employment opportunities, while students (particularly international students that might not be familiar with many of our regional employers) could find employers and opportunities that align with their career goals and programs. If you are an employer that would like to be included on this resource, or a Post-Secondary colleague who is curious about this resource, please let me know! https://lnkd.in/gFeUdWkx
