The Community Pharmacy England website reminds us that the 31st March 2025 is the deadline for pharmacy owners who are delivering Pharmacy First to also deliver the Pharmacy Contraception Service and Hypertension Case-Finding Service to qualify for the monthly £1,000 fixed payment (as well as meeting the relevant consultation threshold). Mike Jones of Community Pharmacy Nottinghamshire comments: “We are excited to bring you this contraception learning opportunity. This is a great opportunity for those who are not yet signed up to this service. We are keen to get you trained and signed up to the service by the end of March 2025. Following the workshop there is an option to attend a support webinar with Kirsty Armstrong who leads the service for NHS England and Alastair Buxton of Community Pharmacy England. Two other community pharmacists and I who deliver the service will also be there to answer questions. The workshop part of this learning will be hosted by Penny Mosley, and I will be attending as speaker for the event". Choosing correct oral emergency contraception (EC) can be challenging and sometimes confusing for pharmacy students and even pharmacists. To make this process clearer and more accessible, I created this flowchart as a visual representation to simplify decision-making and ensure students feel confident in managing real-life patient scenarios. This flowchart is based on the Emergency Contraception Treatment Guidelines for Pharmacists from #APF26, and I’d like to acknowledge the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia for their role in providing this invaluable resource. Understanding emergency contraception options is crucial for providing timely and effective patient care. This tool is designed to support students in mastering this important aspect of pharmacy practice. What do you think of this resource? I’d love to hear your feedback or any ideas for future learning tools! #PharmacyPractice #EmergencyContraception #PharmacyEducation #PharmacistRole

GP Action: harness the opportunity We appreciate that it’s tougher than usual for community pharmacies during this period of industrial action by GPs. However, this provides contractors with an ideal opportunity to showcase how community pharmacy can deliver brilliant patient-centred care for everyone. You’re undoubtedly going to see even more people into your pharmacy, and this is your chance to communicate with both new and existing patients the wide array of services that community pharmacy can offer. Here are a few suggestions to ensure you and your team ✅ Brief your team – tell them what you would like them to say to new patients when they visit ✅ Inform female patients about the Contraception Service. Heading on holiday and can’t get your contraception from your GP practice? No problem, we can help and here’s how ✅ Offer patients a blood pressure test ✅ Ask every person who visits if they’d like to book a flu jab ✅ Take very opportunity to market your pharmacy and make sure everyone in your local community knows exactly what you can do when it comes to primary care Simply do your best for everyone you talk to over the coming weeks and months – let them know you’re always here to help. #communitypharmacy #pharmacy #pharmacist

The Biden-Harris administration has been busy working to promote #ContraceptiveAccess and quality. Today, the Centers for Medicaid and CHIP Services (CMCS) released a CMCS Information Bulletin (CIB) on “#Medicaid #FamilyPlanning Services and Supplies: Requirements and Best Practices.” This CIB provides states with guidance on requirements for the coverage of family planning services and supplies, strategies to reduce barriers and increase access to contraception, confidentiality protections for those seeking family planning services and supplies, and information on #QualityMeasures. https://lnkd.in/eeYAqKN4 Earlier this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use, 2024 (U.S. MEC) and U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use, 2024 (U.S. SPR) (https://lnkd.in/ezw9S67i). These updated evidence-based #contraception recommendations can be used by health care providers to support the provision of person-centered contraceptive counseling and services in a non-coercive manner and remove unnecessary medical barriers to accessing and using contraception. Of note, the CDC Practice Recommendations includes exciting new guidance on pain management for IUD insertion, an issue Deanna Hartog, J.D. and I tackled in a blog post last summer. The guidance outlines that: 1. Providers should counsel patients about pain management before the IUD insertion procedure. 2. Pain management should be a “shared decision making” process—in other words, providers are being asked to focus more on a patient’s individual preferences and concerns 3. More pain relief options should be available during the procedure. In addition to lidocaine shots, people can now also request anesthetic gel, creams and sprays. Proud of Tassie pharmacists tonight. Approx 85% of Tasmanian pharmacies are taking part in the UTI prescribing pilot (and are now eligible to offer OCP refill consults if their pharmacists are endorsed) and 96% of these participating pharmacies have completed at least one consultation since the pilot commenced. Averaging 123 consults per week. This is a much higher participation rate and consultation rate per capita than mainland states. Even more noteable: 37% of Tasmanian Pharmacy UTI consults have occurred in rural pharmacies in MMM5-7 so Tasmanian pharmacists are improving access to timely assessment/treatment to women in rural areas where timely access to doctors can be the hardest. If you haven’t yet completed the training to become endorsed to prescribe for UTI or OCP refills - PSA training on each is available (and free for PSA members): UTI: https://lnkd.in/gyuwYpQz Contraception Essentials: https://lnkd.in/gx_2GrW7
