Physical therapy is really a misnomer for the profession today. The most modern, effective physical therapy goes beyond physical to accurately diagnose and treat patients. We use the biopsychosocial model to get at the root cause of pain, delivering meaningful and sustainable change.

As physicians, it is important that we endeavor to recognize and address the implicit bias that can creep into our work. I am not speaking of the overt or malicious bias that cannot be tolerated and which thankfully is rare in medical circles, but instead the bias that is related to how we view patients’ conditions. The most telling example of this is when older patients experience issues that some doctors view simply as byproducts of aging – a most bias view.
