Today's spotlight is on Iryna Ozymok, director of the local economic development program at the Western NIS Enterprise Fund and founder of the International Mayors Summit. In an exclusive comment for Interfax, Iryna shares her vision of the challenges of urbanization and its impact on the new generation. Key insights include: 🔹 Youth should be an active subject in decisions that shape the future of cities. Their involvement in the processes of management and development of urban projects contributes to the creation of attractive and responsible urban environments. 🔹 Investing in non-formal education and information campaigns, equip young people with knowledge about urban governance and public activities, and expand their opportunities to influence community development. 🔹 The introduction of structures, such as children's town halls or youth councils, where young people can officially express their ideas and proposals, ensures their direct participation in decision-making and contributes to the democratization of city management. We believe in the potential of youth as drivers of innovation and change.

‘We don’t need this fascist groove thang’ - Heaven 17 In a week that has left communities reeling from premeditated Nazi like assaults on refugees, vulnerable people, homes and places of civic life, it may seem irrelevant to shout about office work. But. Actually, no. It makes it even more apposite. The team – and more importantly, borough colleagues, local groups and partners, Mayor’s Design Advocates, design teams and other experts (!) – have been working hard to get the Civic Partnership Programme off the ground across Mayoral and General Elections. The Mayor of London’s £12 million CPP programme supports exemplar strategies and projects tackling long-standing inequalities in areas undergoing change and growth with these non-negotiable objectives: EXPANDING THE PUBLIC REALM - creating open, connected and inclusive public spaces, high streets and green and blue spaces, that are child-friendly and safe for women, girls, and gender diverse people, alongside social and cultural infrastructure STRENGTHENING REPRESENTATION AND AUTHORSHIP – delivering projects for and with the communities they serve, particularly people from Black and global majority communities, and younger and older Londoners ADDRESSING THE CLIMATE AND ECOLOGICAL EMERGENCIES – strengthening London's climate resilience and tackling environmental inequalities with resource-conscious approaches such as encouraging a circular economy To riff off Nairn: ‘The human essence of the city is now in places which, with ideas, grit, spit and care, can offer everything: Neasden, Ilford, Hoxton, Lewisham and Croydon.’ We are ready to get stuck in. How has Christchurch’s 'The Igloo' lowered youth crime using behavioural design? I truly love examples of looking beyond the data and using a human centered approach to change. This one takes the 🍰 🧊 Christchurch’s new youth hub, The Igloo, located at the bus interchange, is a beacon of hope for reducing youth violence. Funded by the city council and YCD, it offers free haircuts, games, and DJing, attracting 50-100 youths daily. 🎯 The result? A significant drop in violence and a community coming together to create safer, more engaging spaces for young people. My three key takeaways: ✅ Safe spaces matter: providing engaging environments reduces youth violence. ✅ Building relationships: respectful connections foster positive behaviour. ✅ Community impact: effective initiatives can inspire broader change. It’s easy to pop a plaster over systemic issues, and hope for the best. While traditional economic development assumes that development will “trickle down” benefits to residents, community wealth building employs and builds on existing assets within the local community to build sustainable ecosystems that promote equity and provide direct benefit to local residents. So, with a view to the near future and the start of the next political cycle, Localis has asked a wide range of policy experts, local government leaders and industry bodies, to sketch their plan for what a successful planning system that generates community support for development might look like. The contributors to Localis’s essay collection set out ideas for a hope-filled future in which the new homes and developments our country needs might be built in harmony with existing communities and in line with the contours of place. Our fourteen essays cover a lot of ground from diverse experiences and backgrounds, as planners, local politicians, policymakers and developers and covering contexts from the rural to the very urban, greenfield to brownfield. First day of UKREiiF. Already has some great meetings and now hearing about Developing the Cambridge Phenomenon with community at its heart. Peter Freeman from Homes England speaking alongside Jackie Sadek (Chair of UK Innovation Corridor) and Cllr Mike Davey (Leader of Cambridge City Council). Mike referred to a locally led development corporation. Would be surprised if Cambridge won’t be part of levelling up as next Government needs to focus first on where growth is to help wider levelling up. Warning cannot just build homes, need jobs and other services. Scale of 150k homes and job to be done by Homes England cannot be under estimated. Peter refers to building trust and confidence and finding things that work for everyone. Bring homes, open space, education and jobs together in lock step then places fail. Jackie verbalised frustrations that Government leaving local government to sort the water scarcity issues out themselves. Needs collaborative effort community, local and central government and private sector. New towns and communities here to stay regardless of colour of government. To accelerate creative solutions to the problems facing urban communities, the Urban Equity Collaborative employs an intersectional, multidisciplinary, and collaborative approach that upholds equitable community partnerships. Supported by a Grand Challenges Grant and co-led by Willow Lung-Amam, Ph.D. (Maryland School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation), Nancy Raquel Mirabal (University of Maryland - College of Arts and Humanities), and Devon Payne-Sturges (University of Maryland School of Public Health), the UEC's work has focused on issues of dispossession and displacement, and specifically issues of affordable housing access, immigrant rights, and small business displacement. https://lnkd.in/eu-zSA2a
