RAISE THE HAND! Raise your hand if you can identify an important tourist destination and the wine territory and appellation that corresponds to it. I know someone will tell me they didn't understand the question, 😥 but this is precisely the point of the argument: in part, it is a lack of curiosity on the part of consumers (I'm getting tired of calling them wine tourists!), in large part, it is still because even though wine tourism is optimistically on the rise, the promotion bodies continue strictly to proceed in the vein of 'we have always done it this way' and pay no attention whatsoever to how the consumer world 😲 around them thinks and how 'exploiting' the notoriety of the destination in which they operate can be beneficial to all. Last summer, I visited an area trying to fuse the two, not least because their 'Wine Route' turned 70 years old in 2024. 🎂 Unfortunately, despite consciously investing in promoting the area and representing a critical wine-producing region in Germany, I could not find a line about the road's 70th birthday in English. I certainly expected it in something other than Italian. The Baden Wine Route coincides for a few kilometers with the Black Forest, 🌲 one of the most popular destinations in the country's southwest. Baden is also a prestigious region for Riesling and Pinot Noir. 🍇 It is an area described by Emperor Joseph II of Habsburg-Lorraine as 'It is here that Germany begins to become Italy.' The ecological costs of competing at the World Barista Championship. One month ago we were reporting extensively about Felix and his innovative espresso preparation. Felix travelled with four other team members to Busan, South Korea, to compete with the world's best Baristas. Technically speaking: Felix travelled around the globe with four other people to make coffee for 15 minutes on a stage. If you'd like to ask: "My gosh, is it really worthwile?" Let's have this discussion another time. Today, we would like to speak about the CO₂ emissions of the undertaking. Tobias Milz from our Kaffeemacher:innen team calculated our ecological footprint of our roastery earlier this year, see his summary here: https://lnkd.in/gtNpjHaQ Now, Tobias calculated the footprint of the "15min of Busan" which adds up to more than 24t of CO₂. This is more than we emitted in our roastery in 2022 when we roasted 60t of coffee. This MUST be part of a holistic perspective on events like the World Coffee Events. Massive emissions are an intrinsic part of these events. So - shall we further participate in these events? shall we leave it? can we make it better? There are ideas and in short: yes, we must do better. But first: let's accept the fact that these emissions are brutal. Let's be brutally honest about it. It was a pleasure (as always) being back in Paris last night for our latest ‘AI x Wine Tasting’ city event, hosted at our amazing new offices in the 16th. Combining two of our passions, and wanting to challenge any old world sensibilities, we explored a selection of wines, labels masked, with the help of our home-grown synthetic sommelier personas, some data visualisation and an enthusiastic crowd of FTI clients and guests.
