Keir Starmer has committed to “getting rid” of regulation which blocks growth. David Lawrence and I find that reforming Judicial Review for planning decisions should be at the top of Starmer's list. Protections for litigants have failed to keep pace with increasingly well-resourced and organised opposition groups, who increasingly rely on crowd sourcing to finance legal challenges, often on repeat grounds. ⚖️⚖️⚖️ To get Britain Building 👷🏗️, the new government should seek to: 1. Reform standing rules 2. Introduce higher costs for unsuccessful challengers, especially where crowd funding has been used 3. Automatically expedite cases through special planning courts 🏠🌆 To see all 7 of our recommendations, read the full briefing here UK Day One Project National Infrastructure Commission Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Mustafa Latif-Aramesh Sam Dumitriu John Myers YIMBY Alliance Britain Remade Tony Blair Institute for Global Change Resolution Foundation Global Counsel Neil Amin-Smith Oliver Hamlet Olivia Novick Marley Miller Camilla Cavendish Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School

PPI 85: Career & Community Spirit (Stop the fighting) My name is Andrew MacPherson. I was born in Kent, in #Tonbridge. I'm #retired now, having worked all my life in various places. I've worked in London in the BBC, and I've worked in the provinces, Southampton, Glasgow, Birmingham, etc. I retired at an early age on health grounds. because the #stress of the second job that I had with the Kent County Council was too much and it was getting me down. I was on tablets and the doctor, she advised me to take time to retire if I could. And I did. I was lucky enough to have reached the age where I could retire. And so I took early retirement, which they arranged for me. So, what does living a good life mean to you? Well, this is a very good life, out in the sunshine. Isn't it? Yes, with the dog, out with Alfie, and a nice blue sky, and with you. Living a good life is, I don't like a hectic life. Having worked in #London for a long time, I'd had enough of that. I was quite glad to leave that. But then I worked for Kent County Council in traffic management and traffic signals, which built up and up and up as I became more able. And that became so stressful, as I said before. So I had to chuck that in. Although I was gratified to know that they wanted me back in a consultancy capacity. But I turned that down for the same reason. Because if I went back again, I would be back to square one. So I've been retired for 20 odd years now and here I am, living my life of retirement with my wife, Christine, and enjoying whatever we can do with Christine who has limited physical abilities, which don't really affect me. fortunately, but it does mean that we have to tailor our activities to suit our situation. So what about an intentional activity? Which one would you say has had the greatest impact on your life? My career, undoubtedly, which I enjoyed a lot. It was a bit of a pain travelling, getting into London and television centre and other places. But apart from that I enjoyed that very much. It was a very interesting career, very interesting life and you're seeing all sorts of people, stars and producers and sound engineers, which was my speciality. And I thought I was doing a great job then and I was enjoying the job. The same thing happened second time around in my second career with the County Council and I got into the design and everything to do with traffic signals from a letter say from a member of the public who was moaning about something and if I if we looked at it and decided that it was a suitable case for doing something about it then we'd do tests, traffic count tests, timing tests and all sorts of things and then then it would be in my lap to design the right kind of traffic signal junction, do the design plan and set out the layout for the road men took to install it in the signal company (Cont in comments). Government confirmation, today, that the Greater Lincolnshire Devolution Deal can proceed to implementation is great news. The next steps will see legislation being laid before Parliament in the coming weeks, leading to the formal establishment of the Greater Lincolnshire Mayoral Combined County Authority (MCCA). With a fair wind, a Mayoral election will take place in May 2025. Strategically significant in so many respects: - £720m investment pot over 30 years, focused on growth - Bringing together key strategic transport responsibilities across the three constituent councils - A key focus on infrastructure to drive growth and connectivity (people, business and places) - A major focus on skills and closing the gap, working with FE / HE and employers, with the prospective devolution of the Government's adult education budget in due course (and subject to readiness conditions being satisfied) - A major opportunity to work in collaboration across the Humber and beyond on industrial decarbonisation and net zero objectives - working with and alongside the proposed Hull and East Yorkshire MCCA (congratulations to all concerned too) , the Humber Freeport et al - A platform to bat effectively for pan regional business growth, inward investment, skills development, environmental sustainability + a single voice into Government. And more. A genuine window to catalyse opportunity and positive change for residents, families, businesses and communities over time. From a North East Lincs perspective, a game changer in terms of a platform to amplify the reach of our massively important sectors : ports, renewables, seafood processing etc. Behind the scenes, work continues in preparation for the establishment of the MCCA , its governance and the wider implementation of the Devolution Deal. A great example of strategic collaboration across three upper tier Local Authorities. Couldn't be more proud of those colleagues of mine who've worked their socks off to get us to this key milestone. A huge moment for region and place. Onwards. #devolution #devolutiondeal #GreaterLincolnshire #growth #Humber #economicgrowth #skills #infrastructure #TeamNEL

The concept of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) dates back thousands of years. In ancient times, early forms of these collaborations were used as legal instruments for infrastructure development and service provisions under the Roman legions, demonstrating the long-standing recognition of the benefits that can be derived from the collaboration between the public and private sectors in delivering public services and infrastructure. In recent times, while the specific arrangements, and scale of these partnerships have changed, the underlying principle of utilising private sector efficiencies and resources for public benefit has remained consistent. What has changed, is how PPPs are increasingly being held accountable to social and environmental standards, with private companies bidding for contracts required to demonstrate sustainable performance. In this article, TBH Director Stuart Cassie (Strategic Advisory Services) discusses the evolving role of Public-Private Partnerships in promoting sustainable infrastructure development. What is Equity? These days there is a lot of misinformation and confusion about it. Many confuse it with diversity or affirmative action, belonging or discrimination but equity is a process to bring balance into policy decisions and planning actions to address unfairness. This is a great 9-minute video on how local governments can effectively collaborate with the community to boost resilience and implement real equity in their projects and planning. It highlights the work of one of Oakland Parks Recreation & Youth Development's recreation centers, the Lincoln Square Recreation Center. It also highlights the work done by other Bay Area cities and communities. organizations. Save it for your watch list, for when you're feeling down/tired/exhausted/frustrated, to lift you and remind you, why and how, the hard work that you all do, in keeping the city going, matters and that equity is about all of us. https://lnkd.in/gBhP2Aid

Keir Starmer has just outlined his “plan for change” with six new milestones, aimed at resetting the choppy start to his tenure. These are supposed to align with voter priorities and create specific targets to show The Labour Party is delivering for the public. The six milestones are as follows: - Ensure more police on the streets with 13,000 new neighborhood police officers - Ensure a record proportion of five year olds starting school are ready to learn - Build 1.5 million additional houses (300k/year) - Secure more home grown energy, and achieve 95% clean energy by 2030 - Reduce NHS waiting times with an 18 week target from referral to treatment - Increase living standards and target the highest sustained growth in the G7 Will these help to revitalise Starmer’s plunging popularity ratings?

The support for young professionals in the north east is way too fragmented. And hard to find. But that creates a massive opportunity to solve that problem. All that’s needed: ✅ Gather the (many) willing people in businesses that want to see young professionals supported more. ✅ Get to the root of the real problem. ✅ Find a common theme that can be leveraged to bring young professionals together. ✅ Pull that lever (HARD). The barrier is resources (time, people… money… and systems). There’s a lot of trial and error involved to actually solve this problem. That’s just some of the insight I’ve experienced from Co-founding HIYP and attending yesterday’s event at Muckle LLP Newcastle office. What support do you want to see be give to young professionals in the northeast? Common Purpose Awa Traore Jon Malton Fiona Whitehurst Naomi Oosman - Watts Eleanor Clyne Ebba McGuigan Gayle Leach Larry Roberts Sarah Carnegie
