Day 11: Share tips for assembling a great production team.
I love this topic!
I am grateful to have worked with beautiful people on my productions so far. Some I have worked with up to four times... speaks volumes. I enjoy working with them because they understand what it means to collaborate, I have never had to micromanage them, therefore, they do not stress me. Film production is already stressful, you cannot afford to work with people who add to the stress. As a producer, it is your job to spot the right people when you are assembling your team; it will do you a lot of good.
Assembling a great production team hinges on a blend of strategic selection and fostering collaboration.
I would begin by identifying the core skills needed for the project, i.e. expertise in key areas of production like directing, cinematography, sound, editing, etc. I seek out individuals who not only have strong credentials and experience but also demonstrate a passion for the project’s vision. Building a team with complementary skills ensures that each member can contribute effectively while covering all necessary aspects of production.
Equally important is nurturing a positive team dynamic. So, it is wise to hire people with a positive mindset and energy, encourage open communication and a collaborative atmosphere where ideas can be freely exchanged.
Fireside chats before or after the day's shoot or during meal breaks will help to maintain focus and ensure everyone is aligned with the project’s goals and everyone is communicating their challenges so that they can be solved.
By carefully selecting skilled individuals with the right energy, ensuring that they have all their work tools, ensuring that they are comfortable, paying them at the agreed date, and fostering a supportive environment, you can assemble a production team that is both effective and motivated to bring your vision to life.

I think sound supervisors, studio managers, post supervisors, plus editors, other post audio folk... Film directors do maybe one film a year. Those I just mentioned do multiple projects a year. Just my thoughts though. I mean, nothing wrong reaching out to directors too.
