Answering the question : What does "Good Nurse" mean to you? Thanks Mandy Irby, The Birth Nurse at sparking the conversation When I was a bedside nurse - Good nurse to me, meant providing hollistic care to my patients. It also meant advocating for them and empowering them to self advocate. Unfortunately, I didnt see caring for myself as "good". I thought it was selfish and it led to my somewhat resenting my work over time. As a nurse manager , "Good nurse", means helping my team contribute to creating a positive and healthy workplace by creating systems that foster effective communication and encourage personal wellbeing of staff. Its reminding staff to pace themself and take care of their health. That way they can have a long and rewarding career. Just like in the aeroplane safety briefing : Rather than placing the oxygen mask on the patient first, they put the oxygen mask on themself first. Where does this leave the patient? With good continuity of care and they are cared for in a place where they enjoy being because the environment is healthy and positive. What do you think ?

Is it best to go home knowing you did all you could do for your patients, and that feels like a good job? Do you need feedback from your patient to know you did well? Is it more important to prioritize what your facility prioritizes? Are these definitions ever in conflict? I'm genuinely curious and feel like it's important to discuss the sometimes conflicting priorities that nurses juggle regularly. Health boards given deadline to cut agency nurses Health boards have until November to stop their use of agency nurses in efforts to save money. Agency nurses – nurses usually employed by private companies who are offered temporary roles across the NHS to cover staffing gaps, usually at an enhanced hourly rate – will only be allowed in ‘clear situations’ where clinical safety is at risk or where services would otherwise be suspended. In a letter sent to board chief executives, the Scottish government’s Director of Health Workforce and Interim Chief Nursing Office say that all use of agency nurses to plug gaps thereafter will need to be signed-off by a local executive director. A similar policy stopping the use of agency staff to fill healthcare support worker and unregistered staff shifts was put into place from April this year. Both measures come as part of wide-ranging cost saving measures being put into place across the NHS in Scotland. Health boards together face more than £800,000 of savings cuts this financial year. Why does NHS Scotland use agency nurses? Most health boards report that recruitment challenges to substantial posts have increased their use of expensive agency staff over this time. There are more than 3,102 whole-time equivalent (WTE) vacancies within nursing and midwifery across NHS Scotland. Meanwhile, new safe staffing requirements to cut the working week to 37 hours for nurses have also seen boards draft in agency nurses to meet their legal obligations and maintain safe services.
