The Athens City Council adopted a new Water Conservation Plan during its regular meeting Tuesday, Nov. 12. The plan, developed to meet Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requirements, outlines a strategic approach to managing the city’s water supply while addressing current and future needs. Key objectives include reducing per capita water usage, improving leak detection, and promoting public awareness of conservation practices. The plan emphasizes initiatives such as universal metering, public education campaigns, and enhanced leak detection programs to minimize water loss, which accounted for 18.5 percent of total metered water in 2023. It also includes a drought contingency plan with clear guidelines for addressing water shortages, from voluntary conservation measures to mandatory restrictions. The plan can be found on the City's website here. https://lnkd.in/gZJfTyuX

An enlightening article from our member Badger Meter on the difference between water scarcity and water stress. The article discusses ways to address both, including: 💧Water conservation 💧Water reuse 💧Desalination 💧Smart water systems https://ow.ly/4AxA50UCOQ2 If your organization includes sites in places of water stress or scarcity (or if you don't know!), The Water Council can help through our WAVE: Water Stewardship Verified program.

Florida's surface water quality standards are designed to protect the state's abundant water resources, which include over 50,000 miles of rivers and streams, 7,800 lakes, and 4,000 square miles of estuaries. These standards are part of the state's Water Quality Standards Program, which is regulated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Here are some key components of Florida's surface water quality standards: 1. Classes and Uses: Florida's surface waters are classified into six classes, each with designated uses. These classes range from potable water supplies (Class I) to agricultural water supplies (Class IV). 2. Water Quality Criteria: Criteria are established to protect the beneficial uses of the waters, such as aquatic life, human health, and recreation. These criteria are detailed in the Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.). 3. Anti-Degradation Policy: This policy ensures that the quality of Florida's waters is maintained and protected from significant degradation. 4. Outstanding Florida Waters: Certain waters are given special protection due to their high quality and ecological significance. Thames Water has been discharging untreated sewage into our rivers. This not only pollutes the water but also poses serious threats to aquatic life and disrupts delicate ecosystems. According to the Environment Agency, in 2020 alone, water companies in England released untreated sewage into rivers over 400,000 times - an alarming statistic that cannot be ignored (source: The Guardian). There has been at least 72 billion litres of sewage discharges since 2020!Water companies are permitted to release sewage into rivers and seas under regulations dating back to 1997 and updated in 2009. The rules are intended to only allow sewage to be released during exceptional circumstances, such as heavy rain, to avoid it backing up into homes and businesses (source: The Telegraph). We clearly need a change in law/legislation in order for this to stop and for the ministers and regulators to be held accountable! https://lnkd.in/gfTSFnXq
