How important is it to elicit #patient-reported outcomes in every day clinical practice? It makes logical sense, of course! We’re excited to highlight the contribution of Amital Isaac, Sheba Global’s Deputy Head of Multimedia Content and a 3rd-year medical student in our joint program with the University of Nicosia. Amital collaborated with a team of women’s healthcare specialists, led by Dr. Malcolm Mackenzie at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA, to better understand the impact of laparoscopic excision surgery on women with endometriosis. Published in the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, their findings are groundbreaking: laparoscopic excision improves symptoms and significantly enhances the quality of life of women affected by this condition. Endometriosis impacts 1 in 10 women globally, making this research an important step forward in offering a more effective surgical solution. We are proud of Amital and her colleagues for their commitment to advancing women’s health and look forward to seeing more groundbreaking research emerge from Sheba's talented staff. We're thrilled to welcome a new affiliation with FaCe - Family Focused Healthcare Research Center for the PhD project "The patient pathway after neonatal gastrointestinal surgery - how to support the family?" ✨ The study us led by PhD student Karina Hesselvig Vaupell. 🎯 Primary objective: The study experiences and needs from parents and health care professionals at hospital and at home, when looking at the patient pathway after infant neonatal gastrointestinal surgery. 🔍 Project design: This PhD project has a mixed-methods research design; an integrative review, a quantitative study (questionnaires), and a qualitative study (observations and interviews). The project is part of the GAIN project affilitated with FaCe - Family Focused Healthcare Research Center. I'm excited to share the latest research on Aquablation therapy, recently featured in The Gold Journal Urology. This study, ‘Safety and Efficacy of Same Day Discharge for Men Undergoing Robotic-Assisted Aquablation Prostate Surgery in an Ambulatory Surgery Center Setting’ not only underscores the feasibility of performing #Aquablation as a day case procedure, but also the transformative impact Aquablation therapy is having on patients, surgeons, and healthcare systems alike. For patients, the ability to achieve same-day discharge (98% of cases) with minimal postoperative pain and a preservation of sexual function thanks to meticulous focal cautery during the procedure. This research reaffirms our commitment to advancing urological care and improving outcomes for all stakeholders involved. 🚨❓ Why are women underrepresented in cardiac surgery trials? ❓🚨 A recent article in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery highlights the critical issue of underrepresentation of women in cardiothoracic surgical trials. Despite comprising nearly half of the population, only 30% of participants in these trials are women. This disparity affects the generalizability and applicability of research findings. At the 2024 International Pediatric Intestinal Failure and Rehabilitation Symposium, we asked Dr. Ajai Khanna, MD, PhD, FACS, FRCS, a Professor of Surgery and a Pediatric Transplant Surgeon at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, what was his most important take away from the symposium. The landscape of neuroendovascular surgery and neurocritical care has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades. In 2013, papers were published questioning whether #neuroendovascular surgery was DEAD! In 2004, #neurocritical care was struggling to survive as a discipline. Today, both have become integral and fundamental components of what a comprehensive stroke center is and healthcare. The field survived and thrived because pioneers pushed forward.
