📢On September 4, 2024, SVRI gathered in Kathmandu, Nepal, with SVRI grantees and other stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities in turning research on violence against women and children into practical solutions. 🌟This new blogpost written by Priti Prabhughate and Morma Moremi summarizes what SVRI, local researchers, practitioners, and government officials discussed to strengthen Nepal’s evidence ecosystem. The main takeaways of the meeting were : 🔎 Researchers in Nepal face limited resources and we need to invest in local researchers’ capacity. 🔎 Building skills, sharing knowledge, and fostering collaboration are essential for impactful change. 🔎 It’s critical to ensure the practical use of the evidence by making research accessible to NGOs and the government. 🚀 By coming together to address these issues, we can make meaningful progress in preventing and responding to VAC & VAW in Nepal and the South Asian region. ➡️ Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gfJFachw #SVRIGrant #EndViolence #VAW #VAC #NepalResearch #EvidenceForChange #ResearchImpact

👉What led to fall of sheikh Hasina? ✅ Sheikh Hasina, the leader of Bangladesh's Awami League, brought economic progress to Bangladesh, lifting millions out of poverty, but ultimately had to resign and leave the country due to internal challenges ✅ The reinstatement of a controversial quota system for government jobs by the Bangladesh high court triggered widespread student protests, exacerbated by Ms. Hasina's lack of political legitimacy. ✅ Economic challenges, including the impact of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war, contributed to high inflation and youth unemployment, which fueled public discontent. ✅ Ms. Hasina's failure to gauge the anger of the students and her reliance on excessive force to quell protests led to her downfall. ✅ In the wake of Ms. Hasina's resignation, an interim government headed by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus has been announced, but concerns about the future stability of Bangladesh remain.

Sikhs in British Parliament: Upholding Seva for the Greater Good The recent increase in Sikh representation in the British Parliament, from two to eleven MPs, marks a significant moment for Sikhi and public service. This rise signifies a growing commitment to the principle of "Seva," a core Sikh tenet emphasizing selfless service for the betterment of humanity. Seva is more than just volunteering; it's a way of life. It's about putting the needs of others before your own, working tirelessly to create a more just and equitable society. This philosophy aligns perfectly with the core values of a responsible parliamentarian – working for the collective good and representing the diverse interests of their constituents. The Sikh prayer of Ardaas, recited before any undertaking, beautifully embodies this spirit of service. It's a call for wisdom, compassion, and the strength to serve all with integrity. As these eleven Sikh MPs embark on their parliamentary roles, let us hope they are guided by the principles of Sarbat Da Bhalla (the well-being of all). Their presence is an opportunity to champion not just Sikh issues, but to advocate for policies that uplift all communities. Their commitment to Seva can serve as an inspiration for all public servants, reminding us of the importance of putting the needs of the people first. Here's to a future where Sikh values of selfless service continue to enrich British politics and contribute to a more inclusive and prosperous society for all. #SikhsInParliament #Seva #PublicService #Ardaas #SarbatDaBhalla #Diversity #Inclusion

Happy Quaid-e-Azam Day! Together, let’s honor his legacy by taking steps towards the Pakistan he dreamed of. As we reflect on his legacy, it’s important to acknowledge how far we’ve come—and where we’ve fallen short of his vision: A Pakistan rooted in unity, faith, and discipline. A nation where justice, equality, and religious freedom are the foundations of society. Economic self-sufficiency and education as pillars of progress. Where We Stand Today: While we’ve made strides in some areas, challenges remain: The need for greater unity amidst growing divisions. Strengthening democracy and justice to fulfill his ideals. Bridging gaps in education, healthcare, and economic equality. A Call to Action: Quaid-e-Azam reminded us: "No nation can rise to the height of glory unless your women are side by side with you." Today, let us pledge to uphold these principles—strengthening our resolve to build a Pakistan that truly embodies his vision. #QuaidEAzam #MuhammadAliJinnah #UnityFaithDiscipline #PakistanVision

Bangladesh was named The Economist's Country of the Year in 2024, for overthrowing an autocrat. However, as I stood at CPF during CHOGM 2024 in Samoa, I couldn't help but reflect on the devastating cost of our 're-independence.' The July Uprising in Bangladesh, a fight for democracy and human rights, claimed thousands of lives, most of them young students demanding a better future. This tragedy forces us to examine the role of global institutions like the Commonwealth. What is their duty before such crises erupt, and how effective are they during moments when the world’s eyes are watching? Institutions that champion democracy and human rights must hold themselves accountable for their actions, or inaction, when these very principles are under attack. I had had enough of wishy-washy platitudes. It’s time for meaningful, decisive action from platforms with the power to make a difference. Silence, or empty words, is complicity. 📍CPF, CHOGM 2024, Samoa 🇼🇸 #Bangladesh #SaveBangladeshiStudents #Democracy #HumanRights #publicspeaking

I have this theory that Nepal is still not a fully democratic society because we hesitate to marry without getting explicit permission from our parents. Mind you, this inability to exercise free will in marriage was the exact circumstance in the royal family that kickstarted the chain of events that would eventually end the monarchy. So, I reckon it's an important yet underrated aspect. Like this proves that there's still remnants of a feudalistic society in our family dynamics which is sort of holding back individualism and free will - two of the most palatable fruits of a democratic society. I mean, we've got democracy on paper but if we can't exercise it even in our personal lives due to the constraints imposed by the society in the name of culture, was that democracy even worth fighting for? And no, forget about development at a state level. Forget about the economy. Forget about corruption and policies. That's another matter entirely. Think about it from a personal angle. Are you exercising all your rights you should be exercising cos you live in a democratic country? I don't think I am.

I recently had the privilege of being part of a powerful initiative by the Nepal Student Union (NSU) Kathmandu Chapter. In the face of the devastating cooperative fraud scam that has inflicted severe financial hardship on hundreds of thousands of Nepalis, NSU a sister organization of the biggest democratic party in Nepal took a bold step to amplify the voices of the affected and raise awareness through an age-old medium–street drama while Nepali Congress's parliamentarians were taking up this issue in the parliament with fierceness. In the era of digital technologies, online media, and social networks, it seems that traditional methods of communication have long lost their importance and significance. However, this recent event has served as a vivid reminder that traditional communication, when performed by devoted enthusiasts, has a much more powerful effect than expected. #PoliticalStrategy #GrassrootsOrganizing #MovementBuilding #CitizenEngagement #PolicyAdvocacy #SystemicChange #SocialJustice #EconomicEquity #PeoplesPower #VoicingDissent #ResistanceMovement #StreetProtest #PoliticalTheater #SymbolicAction #CreativeActivism
