Today is the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, and for me, it holds profound meaning on many levels. My mother told me the EDD for my birth was December 3rd, but I arrived on November 29th. At age two, I had polio, resulting in a visible disability. As fate would have it, the UN General Assembly in 1992 declared December 3rd as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), making my tie with December 3rd to still play out. For the past 49 years, I’ve lived with a visible disability, and while the journey has had its challenges, it has also fueled my passion as an advocate. I share my story not to gain pity but to foster understanding and create awareness about equity for persons with disabilities. This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” reminds us of the importance of seeing beyond disabilities and recognizing the immense potential and contributions of persons with disabilities. According to Article 25 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, we are entitled to the same opportunities, healthcare, and leadership roles as anyone else. Yet, many are still sidelined. It’s time to change this. Inclusion should not just be a theme but a lived reality for all. #InternationalDayOfPersonsWithDisabilities #Inclusion #Leadership #Equity #Diversity
