Over 190 nations and 23,000 attendees have gathered in Cali, Colombia, for the UN Convention on Biological Diversity's 16th meeting, where world leaders aim to take decisive action to protect biodiversity. High on the agenda is addressing plastic pollution, a key driver of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. These discussions will trickle into Baku’s COP29 and the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution due to take place at the end of November in Busan, Republic of Korea. RAAS: Pioneering a Zero-Waste Future at PLANETech The fight against single-use plastic was a hot topic at the recent PLANETech - Climate Change Technologies conference in Tel Aviv. RAAS, repped by CEO Gilor Damri, shared their approach to tackling this pervasive problem. RAAS (“Reusable As A Solution”) is a champion of the zero-waste movement. They empower companies to break from harmful single-use plastics and embrace sustainable alternatives. Their approach not only reduces environmental impact but also encourages more responsible consumption across industries. Earth Day activities include advocating for widespread awareness on the health risks of plastics, rapidly phasing out all single-use plastics, pushing for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demanding an end to fast fashion. There is no Planet B... Today marks World Earth Day, a day dedicated to highlighting the importance of protecting the environment. The 2024 theme is "Planet vs. Plastics", and aims to raise awareness of the harms of plastic pollution for human and planetary health. This year's focus comes ahead of a historic UN treaty on plastics, which is expected to be agreed by the end of 2024. At present, more than 50 countries, including the UK, have called for an end to plastic pollution by 2040. We know that there is so much more action to be taken and we have a part to play in protecting our environment. From fantastic to tragic—plastic’s story is unfolding in a way never anticipated. What was once convenient, is now choking the planet. Each year, millions of tons of plastic waste invade the ecosystems that nurture life on Earth. This isn’t the end of the story, though. A different ending is possible: it starts with cutting out unnecessary plastic products and redesigning products so that they can be easily reused, repaired, repurposed and recycled.
