🏆 We are proud to be one of the 35 projects selected for the "AI Convergence" Challenge at the AI Action Summit, organised by the French Government via #France2030! Earlier in 2024, IEEE Standards Association | IEEE SA, AI Commons, and the OECD - OCDE responded to a call by #G7 governments as part of the Hiroshima Statement. They asked us to help make generative AI trustworthy through international cooperation, relevant policy developments and practical projects. We responded by launching: 🌍 The Global Trust Challenge: build trust in the age of generative AI 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e4YtZi_q The project aims to promote trust by equipping governments, organisations and individuals to be resilient in the era of scalable synthetic content. To do so, we call upon technologists, policymakers, and others to collaborate to create and test innovative ideas that promote trust and counter disinformation generated and spread through AI. If YOU recognise yourself and your organisation in the above description, please pre-register to join the challenge: 💪💪💪 https://lnkd.in/e4zXifnD This selection in the Culture, Information and Democracy Category brings our project closer to success 🎯 ➕ Find out more about the AI Action Summit website 👉 https://lnkd.in/dM7gMCBq We would like to thank Bruno Bonnell, Anne Bouverot and Guillaume Avrin for including us in the Challenge. ✨ An inspiring seminar on openness in #AI at the École normale supérieure 🌐 On Wednesday, October 9th, I had the privilege of attending the seminar "Unlocking the Benefits of Openness in AI" at the #ENS. This event was especially significant as it launched the consultation for the upcoming AI Action Summit, which will take place at the Élysée Palace on February 10th and 11th, 2025. This summit will bring together heads of state, #Leaders of international organizations, private sector representatives, academia, and civil society to discuss the future of AI. A big thanks to Mitchell Baker from Mozilla, who highlighted one of the key issues facing AI today: access to data. She emphasized that much of the valuable #data needed for AI development is currently "trapped" inside large corporations and needs to be freed for broader innovation. This is a topic that resonates deeply with me, as those who know me well will understand! Arthur Mensch from Mistral AI also raised important points about Europe's current approach to AI, stressing that Europe tends to be under-invested in AI innovation. This is a critical issue for ensuring that Europe remains competitive on the global stage. Lastly, Anne Bouverot from the AI Action Summit shared valuable insights into the ethical challenges of AI and the role of #governments in creating public digital infrastructures that ensure accessibility and equal opportunity for all. A huge thank you to the organizers, especially Mozilla and the Fondation Abeona, for making this seminar possible! 🚀 #Innovation, #Sharing, and #Openness were at the heart of this event –a powerful reminder of the work still ahead to ensure AI develops in a way that benefits all. #Networking

In the #DraghiReport "The future of European competitiveness – In-depth analysis and recommendations", he highlights a crucial issue: "𝘔𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺, 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘌𝘜-𝘸𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴" (pg. 236). This lack of coordination is holding Europe back, especially when it comes to fields like #AI, where we are already falling behind global competitors. Draghi points to #CERN as a prime example of how successful EU-wide collaboration can lead to groundbreaking advancements and suggests "𝘊𝘰𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘬𝘦𝘺 𝘈𝘐 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘜 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭 𝘷𝘪𝘢 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 ‘𝘊𝘌𝘙𝘕-𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘈𝘐 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘶𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳’" This model of coordination is exactly what CLAIRE is advocating for with the #CERN4AI initiative. By fostering collaboration and aligning efforts, we can ensure Europe takes the lead in shaping the future of trustworthy AI. The rapid emergence of new technologies and AI provide opportunities and challenges for societies. This new paper from the International Science Council offers a framework using dimensions of wellbeing, trade and economy, environmental, geostrategic and geopolitical, and technological, that need to be considered when evaluating a new technology.
Two New Zealand researchers are leading the charge for an international policy guide and framework to evaluate AI and other new technologies. Sir Peter Gluckman, director of think tank Koi Tū: The Centre for Informed Futures, and Hema Sridhar, Koi Tū strategic adviser for technological futures, are the lead authors of an international report released by the International Science Council to inform the multiple global and national discussions taking place related to AI. The report, ‘A guide for policy-makers: Evaluating rapidly developing technologies including AI, large language models and beyond’, was launched at a reception at the New Zealand Embassy in Paris with special guest Hon Judith Collins KC MP, Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology. The authors say it is critical that rapidly developing technologies are subject to broad and multidimensional evaluation to maximise the benefits and minimise the very real risks. Sir Peter says the desire to regulate and govern technology is understandable. However, what needs to be considered is whether a specific technology or use be permitted and what are the risks and spillover effects. The report groups the issues into categories including wellbeing (including that of individuals or self, society and social life, and civic life), trade and economy, environmental, geo-strategic and geo-political and technological (system characteristics, design and use). Ms Sridhar, who leads Koi Tū’s work on the impact of technology on society, says the intent is for the framework to provide a checklist that will be useful for all policymakers, decision-makers and the private sector.
