National Security Memorandum-22 (NSM-22), released in April, is a pivotal development for the U.S. energy sector. This new National Security Memorandum significantly reinforces the Department of Energy and CESER’s role in risk management and operational collaboration, positioning us to better address the pressing challenges of climate change, cyber threats, and physical risks. By enhancing CESER’s capabilities, NSM-22 ensures that we can build a more resilient and secure energy infrastructure, safeguarding our nation’s critical systems and supporting a sustainable energy future. The New Geopolitical Weapon: The Impact of Cyberattacks Against Critical Infrastructure https://lnkd.in/efmqvm8i Electricity, transportation, water, communications – these are just some of the systems and assets that keep the world functioning. Critical infrastructure, a complex interconnected ecosystem, is what props entire countries up and is vital for the functioning of society and the economy. This is why it is under attack. Threat actors, usually nation-state backed, know this very well. By taking down the poorly protected power grid of a city or even a country, cyber attackers cannot only cause mass chaos, but any threat to the critical infrastructure sectors could have potentially debilitating national security, economic and public health or safety […]

Energy systems around the world are facing increasing cybersecurity threats. U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently issued the Supply Chain Cybersecurity Principles to emphasize the importance of collaboration between suppliers and end-users to protect our critical infrastructure. As both an owner and operator of critical infrastructure and an OT cybersecurity vendor, we have the experience to help our customers improve operational resilience and lower OT cybersecurity risk. #cybersecurity #energysecurity #Futureshaper
We're pleased to announce the release of Supply Chain Cybersecurity Principles to strengthen cybersecurity throughout energy infrastructure supply chains. We applaud the National Security Advisor and the White House for lifting this important issue at the international level, and for the industry partners supporting the principles. Today’s planning approaches for the electricity grid have difficulty capturing the risk associated with an intersection of evolving threats and vulnerabilities. To identify the most pressing needs in support of this challenge, NREL recently hosted a workshop that brought together national laboratories, federal agencies, electric utilities, academia, and several other key players. These experts worked together to identify strategies and “national lab hard” challenges to quantifying and prioritizing reduction in risks, such as modeling interdependencies between socially-supporting infrastructure and supply chains. We’re grateful for the enthusiastic engagement with our partners on these pressing issues and look forward to sharing the results of the meeting with the wider research community. Today, Northwave joins NATO’s Nordic Pine 24 in Sweden, a multi-national exercise to strengthen resilience against hybrid threats in the renewable energy sector. With growing threats to our critical infrastructure, this event couldn’t be more timely. The exercise aims to address challenges such as cyberattacks on SCADA systems, supply chain disruptions, and misinformation campaigns. It involves participants from multiple NATO countries, including Sweden, Finland, and the Baltic states, along with experts from the energy and cybersecurity sectors. Our own Country manager in Sweden, Kim Elman, will be the Chief RC Cyber during the event. This is a crucial role of the exercise control team, ensuring that participants from energy companies and government agencies effectively engage in scenarios to improve resilience against threats to critical energy infrastructure. All of Northwave is proud to support the security of such a critical sector for all of Europe, ensuring the safety and resilience of renewable energy systems that power our continent’s future. This article reminds me of all the articles, professional webinars, and meetings I attended pre-2019 on pandemic awareness and response. It was interesting during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic when news and government entities would say the pandemic was "Unforeseeable", "Black Swan", ect. I found those comments interesting given how much information I had seen about it prior to late 2019. Even the WEF and UN did a detailed war gaming for global pandemics in 2018 and 2019. Given all the attention to electric utility attacks, specifically cyber. As noted in this article that over 90 known attacks in just the first quarter of 2023. I think we should all be watching out for our community infrastructure in coming months. The next question being: is your household ready? Is your business ready? https://lnkd.in/g8BTKDyz
