Delivering clean drinking water to our customers while keeping our people safe is our top priority – and it’s what our customers tell us they care about most, too. In the face of population growth, ageing infrastructure and increasingly unpredictable and warm weather putting significant pressure on the UK’s water networks, collaboration is key to tackling these challenges. That's why our alliancing model is at the heart of our capital delivery strategy. Our new Integrated Maintenance, Repair and Developer Services (IMRDS) alliance, builds on this principle and marks the continuation of a 9 year relationship, with the exciting prospect of a further 6 years of collaboration between Anglian Water, Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks and Clancy. With each partner offering specialised expertise, IMRDS will bring together the best person and team for each job, ensuring we can give our customers the best service possible in the most effective and efficient way. Dave Ward, Director of IMRDS, said: “Whether it’s through proactively renewing our network, protecting our most vulnerable mains from the effects of climate change, or ensuring that people moving into their newly built homes are safely connected to mains water, the IMRDS alliance will continue to play a fundamental role in delivering water to customers’ taps over the next five years. “The strength of the IMRDS alliance is in the partnership between Anglian Water, Kier and Clancy. Together, we work to keep our people safe, deliver for our customers, and take care of the environment. I look forward to everything we will achieve as the IMRDS Alliance over the coming years. Today my team at the Government Accountability Office released a Q&A report on mercury cleanup at the Y-12 National Security Complex at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that nuclear weapons production at the Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, resulted in the release of an estimated 700,000 pounds of mercury into the environment. The resulting contamination continues to pose the largest environmental risk at Oak Ridge, according to both DOE and the Environmental Protection Agency. Cleanup at the site will require deactivation and decommissioning of four large buildings, as well as soil and groundwater cleanup nearby, before it can be turned over for construction or expansion of other facilities at the Y-12 complex. This is estimated to take about 20 years and cost $3.2 billion, on top of previous site cleanup work, though DOE officials are currently updating these estimates. DOE tracks risks to its mercury cleanup program by individual project rather than the entire program, which could obscure risks affecting multiple projects. Delays or disruptions in one project may impact others in ways that project-level risk assessment cannot anticipate. We recommend that DOE improve risk management of mercury cleanup, including by managing risks at the program level. https://lnkd.in/etgk2pRJ

🔍 Understanding the Critical Role of the WIPP Program in Safeguarding Our Future The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), located in New Mexico, plays a pivotal role in our nation’s environmental management strategy. As the only deep geologic repository currently in operation in the United States, WIPP is essential for the disposal of transuranic radioactive waste left from the production of nuclear weapons. 🌍 Why WIPP Matters: • Safety First: WIPP ensures that radioactive waste is stored safely, reducing the risk of environmental contamination. • Innovation and Leadership: The program is at the forefront of technological innovations in waste disposal, setting benchmarks globally. • Long-term Stability: By isolating radioactive waste in salt formations known to be stable for millions of years, WIPP provides a long-term solution that protects both the environment and public health. 🤝 Collaboration Across Borders: WIPP’s success is not just a triumph of technology but also of policy and international cooperation. The program’s ongoing research and development efforts offer insights and strategies that could be mirrored worldwide to address similar challenges. 💡 Looking Forward: The commitment to safety, innovation, and sustainability makes WIPP a cornerstone of our national environmental strategy. As professionals dedicated to environmental management and radiological safety, it is our duty to support and learn from such initiatives, ensuring a safer world for future generations. Let’s discuss how we can continue to support and learn from programs like WIPP. What are your thoughts on the future of environmental and waste management technologies? #EnvironmentalManagement #RadiologicalSafety #WIPP #NuclearSafety #SustainableFuture #NREP2024

Exciting news from Sweden! Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB has received an environmental permit to build and operate its deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel in Forsmark and the encapsulation plant in Oskarshamn. This is a significant step forward in managing nuclear waste safely and sustainably 👏👏👏 . There is international scientific consensus that deep geological repositories are the best way we know to keep future generations and our environment safe. As Canada plans its own deep geological repository, it's inspiring to see continued global progress 🌍 . Nuclear waste is not the issue many people think it is. Countries like Sweden, Finland, France, and Canada are leading the way in demonstrating responsible stewardship for the future. #NuclearWasteManagement #Sustainability #FutureGenerations
SKB has received an environmental permit to build and operate the final repository for spent nuclear fuel in Forsmark and the encapsulation plant in Oskarshamn. The judgement was issued by the Land and Environmental Court, which is also granting SKB an enforcement order to enable initial work on the Forsmark area to begin at the turn of the year. https://lnkd.in/dss_KKMr
