Ramzan Mubarak. Lead with empathy and practice flexibility this month. Ramadan is the holiest of months for the Muslim community. People who are observing Ramadan (and fasting) typically wake up at dawn to prepare and have some food and start the fast (no food or liquids - yes, even water) until the fast ends at dusk. Here are some tips to support our Muslim colleagues at work: - accommodate requests for flexibility during this time (i.e., starting work early and leaving early) - schedule meetings in the morning/early afternoons (when energy levels may be higher) - avoid terms like “Lunch & Learn/Coffee chat” when scheduling meetings; try not to schedule training/meetings during lunch hours when lunch is expected (and provided), especially mandatory ones - if you have private wellness/quiet/prayer rooms, encourage those who are observing to use them - accommodate requests for time off during the last 10 days of Ramadan (these are considered the most sacred of the month) - not all Muslims fast during the whole month (for various reasons); if you see someone eating one day and fasting another, don't ask for an explanation - Muslims have diverse traditions and practices, not everyone practices the same way -the month concludes with the celebration of Eid. The Islamic calendar is lunar, and we won’t know the exact date of Eid (as it depends on the sighting of the new moon), so people may request time off at relatively short notice - please be aware of this and stay flexible. Send your Muslim colleague/friend/client your wishes by either saying “Ramadan Mubarak” or “Ramadan Kareem.” It’s shows you are seeing them and that you understand the significance of the month for them.
