#FunFactFriday Situated on the Great Divide in the Teton Wilderness area of Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park, "Two Ocean Pass" is a unique stream that splits, with one side flowing to the West into the Pacific Ocean via the Snake and Columbia rivers, and the other flows East into the Gulf of Mexico, then out to the Atlantic Ocean via the Yellowstone, Missouri, and Mississippi rivers. This hydrological phenomenon could allow fish to swim from the one ocean to the other through the continental divide.

It’s incredibly rare for a meme to almost perfectly capture my cynicism about the uniformed bureaucrats at United States Department of Defense, but here it is. I’m not one for mythologizing the past or treating it as some sort of paradise lost. Humans are humans & we’re only as good as our actions are. There’s no reason the current generation can’t be as great as previous generations, just as there’s no magical force stopping us from backsliding. As Charles Krauthammer said “Decline Is a Choice”. I obviously can’t prove this, but I think that previous generations were haunted by the horrors they experienced. Upon entering WWII, the pre-War US Army had plenty of incompetent clownish bureaucrats, who lost early battles. Thus a brutal Darwinian advancement process separated the #Leaders from the managers. Thus we entered the #ColdWar with an embarrassment of riches in regards to #Leadership. #Vietnam haunted another generation. After the #War they pulled off a near miracle of turning a demoralized, newly all-volunteer #Army into a fearsome fighting force that annihilated Saddam’s #Military in the #GulfWar. Conversely, I’d say that today’s generation of uniformed bureaucrats, instead of being haunted by the failure of the #GWOT; seem much more interested in maintaining a gravy-train of #Jobs & benefits to their constituency. They’re much more interested in getting high on their own supply of BS #Propaganda like “winning matters”, than not letting painful lessons of #Failure from #Iraq & #Afghanistan go to waste.
How does this land.

In the absence of a coordinated, well-resourced approach to adaptation we're going to see a lot more examples like the one below - and this is as true in the global north as the global south. Ad-hoc individual or community action is far less likely to be effective, and really reinforces the need for adaptation planning across different scales. https://lnkd.in/exGj6Ru4?

Taking a Quick Look on Zillow, there’s about $500M in real estate on this short piece of Atlantic Massachusetts coast. A $500K dune seems insufficient, particularly given they were hit with a near worst-case design future, where three relatively rare storms all occurred early in their timeline. We’ve simulated managed retreat previously in City Simulator and found you really have to put yourself in the homeowner’s shoes. Many of these properties are the product of a hard working person’s years of effort, an ocean view retirement reward to be enjoyed over their last 10-20 years. For those folks, our study showed less concern about market value and more about whether their home will remain a great place to live out their days. However, many of these homes look like short term rentals, where there would be considerably more interest in preserving both cash flow and long term equity. Any study into adaptation would have to consider these differing view points to arrive at a shared vision and a plan the community would have the will to push forward.
