Never blame yourself for entering a vicious cycle like this. Rather, we should ask why students feel that they didn’t do anything productive all day. Why the (perceived) lack of progress and/or procrastination? Often the causes are external, like the project is too ambitious or simply does not work as intended, or the supervisor pushes too hard for progress. I acknowledge the existence of the vicious cycle but I think it’s important that students don’t turn the adversity inwards and blame themselves for the lack of progress. Students and supervisors share the same goal of doing great science and making progress and both parts do their best to achieve this.

Last month, I completed one of the milestones in my PhD journey, a 5-minute presentation and poster session about my first-year project. Essentially, I was exploring the idea of a brain age gap, where a predicted age from machine learning models trained on magnetic resonance images could be compared against the actual age of each premature infant, and whether this gap could be conceptualized as a measure of development delay and/or infant health. Technology has enabled myself, and other 2nd-year Developmental and Psychological Sciences students from the Stanford University Graduate School of Education, to reach a broader audience with our work. Penn State faculty and students and representatives from the National Science Foundation (NSF) recently celebrated the official launch of the U.S. National Science Foundation National Synthesis Center for Emergence in the Molecular and Cellular Sciences (NCEMS) with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Verne M. Willaman Gateway to the Life Sciences bridge in the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences building. "NCEMS is bringing a powerhouse of computational and data sciences, particularly at the molecular and cellular level,” said Andrew Read, senior vice president for research, in his remarks at the NCEMS launch event. “We are looking forward to the success of NCEMS and believe there are significant opportunities for driving formative discoveries in this space."  The center, which was first announced in April, will enable research that uses existing, publicly available data to gain new insights about how complex biological systems, such as cells, emerge from simpler molecules. Findings from the research could solve unanswered, fundamental scientific questions and inform the development of disease treatments and various other applications. Through NCEMS' mission, the center will create working groups, develop and test novel methodologies, and provide learning opportunities and workforce training. "NCEMS will work to lower barriers in community-scale research by bringing scientists together to create a community to drive discovery of emergent properties. We are on a growth trajectory that will include more open calls for scientists, postdocs and undergraduates to carry out research on these datasets, as well as to train the next generation in data science and team science," said Ed O'Brien, NCEMS director, professor of chemistry in the Penn State Eberly College of Science and ICDS co-hire. NCEMS currently has three open calls for scientists at different stages of their careers looking to join working groups, working as a postdoctoral fellow or an undergraduate summer intern. The Build Boost: Strengthening science identity Does a student’s participation in a program aimed at engaging and training undergraduate students interested in biomedical careers strengthen their identity as a scientist? This is one of the questions that a team of researchers from the federally funded Diversity Program Consortium (DPC) tackled in a study released June 10. The DPC is an initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health that focuses on implementing and evaluating strategies to enhance the training and mentoring of students and faculty, while also expanding the research capacity of institutions. https://bit.ly/4bAqMHl #DPC #NIH #career #program #BUILD #diversity #research
