For many, tonight is going to be a nervous, stressful sleep (if you are lucky enough to manage). Whilst academic results are important, they are far from everything. 14 years ago, I did not get the grades I needed to study medicine, missing out by one mark in Biology. Despite this I did get into my chosen university, studying Biomedical Science instead. Many years of personal and academic challenges later, I received my Doctorate (just in Biomedical Science), multiple first author publications and now I am working at the same university, ready to receive applications for Clearing 2024. For those who are awaiting their results, do not be afraid of having to pivot directions. Life never works out exactly as planned but, when you look back, it will appear like you did it all on purpose. Best of luck for everyone involved, and for those of you who will be joining us in clearing, please know that St George's, University of London is ready for you! #clearing, #resultsday, #motivation, #education, #medicine, #biomedical,

Choosing to become a doctor is a noble pursuit, but it’s no easy journey. It takes years of study and practice, as well as a bit of luck. For Tony Phan ‘22, a former student of the VMBS' biomedical sciences graduate program, perseverance was another important part of becoming a doctor. Phan's story: https://lnkd.in/gzZJTfu2

This week, nearly 60 invited scientists gathered for the FASEB Science Policy Symposium, themed "Ensuring a Sustainable Biomedical Workforce: Challenges and Opportunities." NIH's Michael Lauer, MD, highlighted trends in PhD training, noting, "We have more people getting PhDs, more postdocs, but the number of faculty positions has gone down.” Participants explored how FASEB can help shape policies for a supportive, sustainable research ecosystem. #PhDTraining #SciencePolicy

🎓 I’m excited to share that I completed my BSc in Biomedical Science from the University of Westminster, with a First Class Honours! Achieving a First is an accomplishment I am truly proud of, as it is a reflection of the countless hours spent in the laboratory, studying cells, disease mechanisms, and the science that drives advancements in healthcare. During my time at Westminster, I had the privilege of learning from inspiring lecturers and collaborating with remarkable peers. I’m so grateful to my supervisor, friends, and family for their support throughout this journey. It wouldn’t have been the same without all of you! One of the highlights of my undergraduate degree was my dissertation: “Investigating the Carcinogenic Effects of BPA Exposure in Breast Cancer.” This project reinforced my drive to tackle health challenges at a molecular level and gave me a greater understanding of the impact of research. As I look ahead, I’m excited to explore what’s next, whether it’s in research, diagnostics, or something entirely unexpected. Here’s to continuing the journey in Biomedical Science, wherever it leads! If you’re in the Biomedical Science field and have advice, insights, or opportunities for someone just starting out, I’d love to connect! Let’s see where this next chapter takes us! #Graduate #BiomedicalScience #Laboratory #LabResearch #JobHunting #ClassOf2024 #LifeSciences #Scientist #CancerResearch

Over your PhD journey, you are bound to hit both highs and lows… why not be in San Diego when that happens? -- This past week, I served as the keynote speaker for the ECE PhD recruitment event at UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. I shared my personal journey through the PhD program, highlighted how my experience was uniquely shaped by San Diego, and also got to show off my current work at LookDeep Health. Using my journey as a reference, I asked the prospective students to consider the following when choosing their training institution: 1. What do you want to obsess over? 2. How do you want to use your training? 3. Who do you want by your side? 4. Who has the information you need? 5. What resources can you use? 6. Where do you want to decompress? The slides that were presented are shared below, as is. == I did not share what specific opportunities led to my current role in the healthcare industry. How do you go about explaining this random journey that consisted of... Get Dr. Brian Lewis as your recruitment host -> Attend UC San Diego -> Become a founding member of Vikash Gilja's lab -> Spend 5 years building a research study to monitor patient activity in the EMU -> Get adopted by Bradley Voytek's lab during the Neuralink era -> Meet Scott Cole before they go off to the Insight Fellowship -> Get introduced to Tom Hata as a mentor for the academia to industry transition -> Have already written code for your thesis that exactly addresses a technical challenge faced by LookDeep Health -> Interview onsite while en route to Burning Man 2019 -> Stay for 4 years and counting -> ? It has been a wild ride, and I am here for it. I am also here for advice and to be advised. Thanks for reading.
