This book presents a unique perspective on dysfunctional political-economic systems, attributing them to capitalism. It challenges traditional views, albeit by incorporating obsolete Marxist class struggle concepts. Blakeley suggests bureaucratization and mass surveillance as consequences of capitalism, proposing democratization at scale as a solution. However, the examples provided are mostly localized and lack scalability. The book raises questions about the effectiveness of democratic planning in addressing capitalism's criticisms. However, the author proposes solutions that may inadvertently perpetuate the same issues she is aiming to resolve. As a result, since the implicit hypothesis that capitalism leads to dysfunctions and bureaucratisation is not convincingly underpinned by using obsolete 19th century concepts, what remains is the usual demonization of everything linked to state or corporate power, whilst conveniently not offering any realistic alternative except revolution. It’s too simplistic and a form of unfounded blackwashing. But for sure there will be a segment of readers for this book. #Economics #Politics #Capitalism #BookReview

Maybe the the biggest challenge of our current time will be climate change and AI, however the bigger challenge of the next generation will be longevity. Both a prize and a curse as most Generation Xs will live until 90. We have a global system that is designed for 20 years of education and 40 years of work plus then around 10 years of retirement. In the near future we may require a system them provides for 60 years of work and then 20 years of retirement and healthcare beyond that. Longevity and wellbeing is exploding as a topic as modern and preventative health allows us to take control of how we age. This will fundamentally reshape global society and economies as we have to adapt to people living longer and either working longer or needing more support and care. Read the book outlive by Peter Attia for more insight. #longevity #healthcare #wellbeing #economy #ageing

“Our minds automatically equate “I have X” with “I deserve X.” When our eyes fall on those who lack the bare necessities, we immediately sympathize and express outrage that they do not have enough, but we do not for a moment allow ourselves to think that their deprivation may be the product of the same process that led to our affluence.” Whether you're feeling gloomy or elated after a certain event, keeping an uplifting read within arm's reach is always a good idea. "Talking to My Daughter About the Economy: or, How Capitalism Works—and How It Fails" by Yanis Varoufakis is one such book. This book blends economics, history, and philosophy, written as a series of letters to the author's daughter. He explains the inner workings of capitalism and builds an argument for an "authentic democracy" where market forces maintain our natural resources. The author's approach makes complex economic concepts accessible and engaging. Overall, it's a light yet thought-provoking read. It's worth sharing with your children, too. Who knows? It might inspire one of them to become an economist or policymaker. To a brighter future ahead! 🚀 #economics #capitalism

This very elucidating book with title “Vienna - how the cities of ideas created the modern world” - hard to read and near to 400 pages - written by Richard Crockett, an ECONOMIST editor, and published in 2023, points excellently out how brains from Vienna shaped culture, business and economics in the world, mainly the US and UK. A short survey article, kind of an abstract of this book, had been published by THE ECONOMIST in its Christmas issue of 2016 under the title “How Vienna produced ideas that shaped the West” (likely also authored by Richard Cockett?): https://lnkd.in/dGpwHmdb #vienna #richardcockett #theviennacircle

Today, I am excited to share insights from the book "The Long Economic and Political Shadow of History, Volume III: Europe and the Americas" edited by Stelios Michalopoulos and Elias Papaioannou. This seminal work delves into the enduring impact of historical events on our modern economic and political landscapes. The book offers a deep dive into the causal relationships between past events and current economic outcomes, shedding light on how colonial origins, factor endowments, and historical institutions continue to influence economic development. Through rigorous econometric analysis, the authors reveal the persistent pattern of historical influence on economic performance. Moreover, the research explores the critical interplay between institutions and cultural traits, showcasing how cultural shifts, like the Protestant Reformation's impact on work ethics, can shape economic trajectories. By understanding these multifaceted influences, we gain a more nuanced perspective on the ongoing narrative of history in shaping our world today. "The Long Economic and Political Shadow of History, Volume III" challenges us to rethink traditional economic models and emphasizes the importance of integrating a historical lens into our analysis of contemporary issues. This insightful work prompts us to uncover fresh perspectives that can inform better policies and contribute to a more equitable and prosperous future. I recently finished reading "The New Confessions of an Economic Hitman" by John Perkins, and I must say, it has been a truly eye-opening experience. The book provides a fascinating insight into the workings of various organizations and sheds light on the intricate mechanisms through which the USA has achieved its current global position. Perkins' account of his own experiences as an economic hitman is both compelling and thought-provoking. It forces the reader to question the ethics and morality of certain practices that have shaped our world today. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding the complexities of global politics, economics, and the role of the USA in shaping the modern world. It's a gripping read that will leave you with a new perspective on the world around us. #BookReview #EconomicHitman #GlobalPolitics #JohnPerkins #MustRead
