Maybe the the biggest challenge of our current time will be climate change and AI, however the bigger challenge of the next generation will be longevity. Both a prize and a curse as most Generation Xs will live until 90. We have a global system that is designed for 20 years of education and 40 years of work plus then around 10 years of retirement. In the near future we may require a system them provides for 60 years of work and then 20 years of retirement and healthcare beyond that. Longevity and wellbeing is exploding as a topic as modern and preventative health allows us to take control of how we age. This will fundamentally reshape global society and economies as we have to adapt to people living longer and either working longer or needing more support and care. Not exactly your average beach read, but an extremely compelling book. «Why Nations Fail» (Acemoglu D. & Robinson J.A.) has helped me more than any other reading understand how the complex balance between politics, economics, power, and development works in this not-so-unpredictable world. I now have a clearer idea why certain cultures and countries behave the way they do. Diving deep into the chapters has helped me rip apart plenty of misconceptions and popular beliefs I held over many developments over history, including colonialism, dictatorships of all sizes and colours, and historical bias leading to seemingly inevitable outcomes in terms of prosperity or impoverishment. Also, this book has helped me see —with little knowledge of the inner dynamics of power— what drives certain nations to repeat the same mistakes while others seem to have a better sense to anticipate growth and success. I wholeheartedly recommend it. Even as a beach read. 😎

At a time when Marxism’s relevance is both critical and challenged by the forces of market dynamics, the author emphasizes the importance of persevering in the exploration and practice of this ideology. The book discusses the global spread of Marxist thought, tracing its expansion through movements and revolutions influenced by the writings of Karl Marx, including his seminal work, Capital. By highlighting the historical and contemporary dimensions of Marxism’s propagation, the book serves as both a historical analysis and a reflection on its enduring significance in today’s socio-economic context.

This book presents a unique perspective on dysfunctional political-economic systems, attributing them to capitalism. It challenges traditional views, albeit by incorporating obsolete Marxist class struggle concepts. Blakeley suggests bureaucratization and mass surveillance as consequences of capitalism, proposing democratization at scale as a solution. However, the examples provided are mostly localized and lack scalability. The book raises questions about the effectiveness of democratic planning in addressing capitalism's criticisms. However, the author proposes solutions that may inadvertently perpetuate the same issues she is aiming to resolve. As a result, since the implicit hypothesis that capitalism leads to dysfunctions and bureaucratisation is not convincingly underpinned by using obsolete 19th century concepts, what remains is the usual demonization of everything linked to state or corporate power, whilst conveniently not offering any realistic alternative except revolution. It’s too simplistic and a form of unfounded blackwashing. But for sure there will be a segment of readers for this book. #Economics #Politics #Capitalism #BookReview
