A NEW ERA FOR LOL ESPORTS LOL ESPORTS, or League of Legends Esports, is the most storied and watched esport of all time. Year-after-year the stakes of the sport get higher and higher, with viewership and participation breaking records. LOL ESPORTS is the leader of the esports industry. But after 10 incredible years, Riot Games knew it was time to usher in the new decade. From the structure of the global leagues, the sport's visual identity, social channels, content approach, WORLDS, anthems, and even the iconic Champions' Summoner's Cup - it was time to hard refresh everything. Over the period of 2 years, we enlisted a roster of creatives (The New Company, Tendril Studio, POSSIBLE, ILOVEDUST) and embarked on a comprehensive rebranding of the entire sport. We deliberately wanted to tip the balance away from the fantasy tropes that had defined the previous 10 years of esports, and into a bold, hypervision of sport that would define the next. Riot Games’ League of Legends World Championship 2024 will soon enter the Knockout (playoff) Stage, though lots of exciting action has already occurred according to analysis from Dmytro Murko of Esports Charts & Streams Charts. Specifically in the Swiss Stage this past week, the matchup between G2 Esports and T1 Entertainment & Sports hit a peak of over 3 million concurrent viewers. This is a new record for group stage viewership at Worlds, resulting from a spike in interest from Korean fans during the Swiss Stage. While Brazilian and Spanish viewership dropped off after paiN Gaming and MAD Lions KOI were knocked out of the tournament, other matches with an English & Korean presence saw an uptick. This T1 vs. G2 match is the second most watched match between these two teams, only behind the Worlds 2019 semifinals when they faced off against each other. The all time viewership record for LoL esports stands with Worlds 2023 during the T1 vs. Weibo Gaming grand final, peaking at over 6.4 million viewers. Will that record be broken again this year?
