🌍🌱 We recently concluded a successful event on "Sustainable Agriculture and Ecosystems Restoration through Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in Africa", in preparation for the IUCN’s Africa Conservation Forum. This unique event united IUCN Members and key conservation and agriculture actors across the continent to discuss the food-climate-livelihood-biodiversity nexus. Key takeaways: 1. 🌾 Agroecology as NbS: With a population over 1.2 billion and increasing land degradation, Africa needs to integrate sustainable practices to preserve biodiversity, enhance food security, and support livelihoods. Agroecology, as a Nature-Based Solution, can transform agriculture, promote sustainability, restore landscapes, and bolster resilience. 2. 🤝 Holistic Approach for Common Ground: Achieving nature restoration, food security, and livelihood goals requires a whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach. This means fostering multi-stakeholder dialogues, establishing common ground on land use and governance, and promoting policy coherence. 3. 🚜 Farmers at the Centre: Farmers, as custodians of nature-based solutions, must be central to policies, science, knowledge, and action to ensure the transition to sustainable agriculture. 4. 💡 Innovative Financing: To scale up NbS for sustainable agriculture and ecosystem restoration, innovative and inclusive financing mechanisms are essential. Currently attending the 1st Zambia Agroecology Conference. Happy to note the growing momentum on having country Agroecology strategies as a climate resilient adaptation pathway in the current climate crisis. The current model has not been effective in addressing the complex issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. The call for a transformation towards a more holistic, inclusive, and environmentally friendly narrative aligns with a growing global awareness on the need for agroecology. There is Great need to push for countries to adopt Agroecology as a climate resilient adaptation approach within their National Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptiona Plans (NAPs). Agroecology is the future of farming and sustainable food systems.

📝 My Soil Regeneration Role in Rwanda During #IBMA2024 👉🏿Soil Health Disparity in Africa The lack of comprehensive soil biology education & regenerative agriculture curriculum in numerous African #universities may hinder the development of resource-recovery farming techniques & restrict the shift towards regenerative futures for the continent's agricultural sector. 📉Cultivating Systemic Change During the recently concluded IBMA Conference 2024 in Rwanda, one of my three specific responsibility & assignments,as a Board Advisor for the Africa Organization of Technology in Agriculture involved conducting a workshop for undergraduates from the University of Rwanda, Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) & Israel-Mashva trained Rwandan farmers. The Africa Organization of Technology in Agriculture (AOTA), the University of Rwanda & the Rwanda Ministry of Agriculture collaborated to organize this workshop as a strategic partnership. 📉My Part: Stimulation of Intellectual Curiosity The workshop presented a significant opportunity for me to inspire intellectual curiosity among students & other participants regarding the dying soils of Africa. It emphasized the importance of ambitiously collaborating with soil citizens (microbes) to essentially establish an ecosystem of nature-based solutions as a viable & ethical response to the interconnected challenges of #land/#soil, #water, #food/#nutrition, #climatechange & the declining #income of #farmers. The Critical Question⁉️ By posing the question "Can The Dying Soils of Africa Live Again?" I intentionally highlighted the urgent need for systemic change through the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices & holistic land management. This approach seeks to balance the requirement for fertile soil with the conservation of forested areas & their ecological importance, ultimately striving to: 🛑Stop African farmers from uncontrolled migration into forested areas of Africa in pursuit of #soilfertility. 🛑Stop the loss of #biodiversity, unchecked runaway soil degradation & disruption of #ecosystems in Africa. 🛑Stop additional greenhouse gas emissions that could worsen climate change. 📢A Call To Action Collaborative action involving #policymakers, local communities, advocates for soil health & #regenerativeagriculture & environmental organizations is crucial to tackle these challenges & advance regenerative land use practices that emphasize both agricultural productivity & environmental #conservation 👉🏿Is your vision & mission focused on significantly dissolving the runaway soil health issues in Africa?
