Road Trip! The Pan-American Highway the world’s longest from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Quellón, Chile, and Ushuaia, Argentina, with official and unofficial routes shown in Mexico and Central and South America. A few selected unofficial routes shown through the United States and Canada as they existed in the early 1960s. In 1966 the new U.S. Interstate Highway System brought official status to most previously unofficial routes in the lower 48 states. The Pan-American Highway[a] is a network of roads stretching across the Americas, measuring about 30,000 kilometres (19,000 mi)[1] in total length. Except for a break of approximately 100 km (60 mi) across the border between Colombia and Panama, the roads link most of the Pacific coastal countries of North America and South America in a connected highway system. According to Guinness World Records, the Pan-American Highway is the world's longest "motorable road". The Pan-American Highway passes through many diverse climates and ecological types—ranging from dense jungles to arid deserts and barren tundra. Some areas are fully passable only during the dry season. There is no official authority for its composition, but it extends in de facto terms from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in the north, to the southern cities of Puerto Montt and Quellón in Chile, and Ushuaia in Argentina.

The town of Delamar was established in the area in June of 1900 while construction on the Sacramento Valley and Eastern Railroad began on December 11, 1906, this railroad company was incorporated on January 8, 1907, the purpose of the Sacramento Valley and Eastern Railroad, was to conduct a 15-mile standard gauge, ore, delivery, and passenger train from Bonita 3 miles north of Kennett to the Bully Hill smelter at Delamar. It was completed in 1908 and operated until 1939, due to the flooding of Shasta Lake for Shasta Dam. Between 1942 and 1945 Shasta Dam was under construction and its reservoir flooded this railroad system under Shasta Lake. It's often seen during drought seasons. The grade and railroad bed with its ties are still intact under the lake along Pit River and Squaw Creek which is seen here in this general overview of its lucrative history. What's not well-known to railroad enthusiasts and local history buffs is the fate of Engine #2 which succeeded after Engine #1 was taken out of commission. Are you looking for a #purpose? In 1906, William "Burro" Schmidt began hand-digging a tunnel through California's El Paso Mountains to provide an easier route for the mines to reach the coast through the mountains. After digging for 14 years, in 1920, a road was built around the mountains immediately rendering Schmidt's Tunnel useless. Yet, he continued digging. 38 years after beginning, Schmidt finally finished his tunnel. The tunnel was 760 meters long and he had moved over 5,000 tons of rock with nothing but a pick, a shovel, and a wheelbarrow. 🙄 Why did he continue digging a tunnel for 24 years after knowing that a road was already built and no one will use his tunnel? Perhaps it wasn’t about transportation but about finding purpose. Schmidt's tunnel, though practically unnecessary, gave him something to look forward to—a reason to keep going, even if it didn’t make sense to others. Maybe purpose isn’t something predefined. It’s something we create by engaging passionately in small, routine tasks, embracing experiences and struggles for their own sake, not for any ultimate goal. Burro Schmidt spent his life digging a tunnel to nowhere, but for him, it was everything. That tunnel gave his life a sense of purpose. 📌 Purpose is not found. Rather, it is invented.

As sea level continues to rise, shoreline interventions that were not designed to live within the tidal range are dealing with increased tidal pressure. These older systems are inevitably failing and will need to be replaced with interventions that can withstand the new tidal levels and adapt as the tides continue to rise.
