Tomorrow Starts With US is a survey carried out with Amárach Research to mark the OCO’s 20th Anniversary. Over 1,000 children participated in the survey where we asked them about the issues that are most important to them and the changes they want to see in Ireland. It was really important that this survey was future focused because this is what our Youth Advisory Panel have told us they wanted! They helped us come up with the concept of Tomorrow Starts With Us and they were passionate about children's voices being heard on the big topics of the day. The cost of living, mental health services and future housing needs were the top three issues for the young people who took part in the survey. Other big findings were the number of children who have experienced bullying (47%), how children view their lives online and the fact that over 70% think Ireland is a good place to reach your potential. In 2023, the European Commission launched the #EUChildParticipation Platform as a safe space for children and teenagers to have their say on laws and policies that concern them. 🔍 The EU Children's Participation Platform published restuls of the survey into what makes children and teenagers feel safe across Europe and it is an interesting read for professionals those who work with children and youth as a stakeholder group in local, regional or national contexts. 🔑 **Key Findings:** Who should help children? 63% prefer to talk to someone in person (rather than going online). 74% would first go to family or relatives and 68% to friends. What children need to feel safer in different places At school: Better hygiene and putting a stop to bullying. At home: Having enough money to live on. And when home is not safe, children need a safe space to go to. After school: More places and activities to meet socially, with adult’s support. In public places: Safer playgrounds and parks and more street lighting. Online: More information and training for adults and children on staying safe online. 💡 **Why It Matters:** The safety and well-being of our youth are paramount. By understanding their perspectives and addressing their needs, we can create inclusive and supportive public spaces and meeting places for all and for all different age groups. 🔗 Click here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gSkYKNWc #Europeyouth #future #planning #YouthSafety #CommunityEngagement #PolicyImpact #EUChildrensPlatform

This new report highlights the need to invest in innovative ways to improve youth's social emotional health. As a foundation that strengthens the capacity of organizations working to improve children's social emotional health, we know just how important this topic is. It should not rest with parents alone. We’re *all* accountable to the social emotional health of youth. “Overall, 93% of parents thought their children always or usually had the social and emotional support they need, but only about 59% of teens felt that to be true, according to the new report." We must do better, together. https://lnkd.in/gxHXBW8E

Did you know it's estimated that between 250,000 and 350,000 children in the UK are affected by parental drug and alcohol misuse — around 2-3% of children under 16. Possible Detrimental Effects on Children and Young People: 😔 Exposure to substance misuse can lead to physical, emotional, and social harm, with risk factors including neglect, physical and emotional abuse, poverty, and social isolation. 🏥 Children may face health risks such as blood-borne infections, incomplete immunisation, and poor access to healthcare. 🏠 The environment can often be chaotic and unpredictable, impacting children’s emotional development and leading to issues such as failure to thrive, psychological disorders, and poor educational attainment. 🧠 As they grow older, these children may be more likely to engage in early substance misuse, offending behaviour, and struggle with mental health and education. Early intervention, including harm reduction, psychosocial interventions, and emotional support, plays a key role in preventing lasting damage to children affected by parental substance misuse. These measures help build resilience, improve mental well-being, and create support networks that protect children from the most harmful effects. I’m proud to have the opportunity to be part of a team focused on supporting these vulnerable families and working towards making a difference in their lives 🧒 To read more find the link to the full article below: https://lnkd.in/eHUpw9ni
