It took me a while to get my head around the ultimate mission at The Passage - to no longer be required! Their aim is for us to live in a world where street homelessness no longer exists and everyone has a place to call home. Unlike the for-profit world, in the charity sector an increase in demand is NOT a good thing Sadly that is what most charities, small & large, across the UK are experiencing There are some depressing stats out this week about foodbanks - with a surge in users between 14-25 years old. How can it be that in this day and age we have more people than ever needing community support to have enough to eat? At Charterpath we are speaking to an enormous number of foodbanks looking for volunteers with financial skills. Having started my volunteering career at The Passage I can vouch for foodbanks being a great place to share your skills: - the objectives are clear - the service model is straightforward - the financials are not complex - the time commitment can be flexible - the charity’s impact is very tangible - it is a wonderful way to connect with and support your local community AND I did enjoy driving the white van around the streets of London 🚐 💨 Feeling inspired? Our team at Whitmore Property recently had the privilege of volunteering with Backpacks 4 SA Kids, sorting and packing essential items for children in need. Since its inception in 2012, Backpacks 4 SA Kids has grown tremendously, helping 540 children in its first year and now assisting over 6,500 children and around 1,000 carers annually. This incredible organisation provides emergency backpacks filled with clothing, toiletries, and comfort items for children aged 0-16 facing neglect, abuse, family violence, or homelessness. These backpacks offer a sense of ownership and comfort to children and young people who often leave home with little or no notice, lacking essential items. Did you know? - In 2021–22, around 1 in 32 (178,000) Australian children under 18 came into contact with the child protection system. - About 1 in 124 (45,500) Australian children under 18 became subjects of substantiated maltreatment. LifeCare Edinburgh and Vintage Vibes Edinburgh have urged The Scottish Government not to go ahead with controversial proposals to introduce a fee for Volunteers who need checks under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG). In the response to the consultation, LifeCare and Vintage Vibes state: “Both LifeCare Edinburgh and Vintage Vibes wholeheartedly disagree with the proposal to move to a fee discount structure for volunteers in Qualifying Voluntary Organisations. The current status quo of no cost PVG’s is essential in empowering third sector organisations to recruit, train, support and retain volunteers effectively and safely. If implemented, these proposals are likely to have a significant, detrimental impact on both LifeCare and Vintage Vibes’ capacity to deliver the life changing, preventative and person-centred support upon which hundreds of older people and their dedicated unpaid carers have come to rely. Farmers has a long history of giving back to the communities in which our employees, agents and customers live and work.
