Safe the Rhino and safe our future! The clock is ticking for the rhinos. The crisis is more urgent than ever. Not only in South Africa, but worldwide, we must protect nature. I am determined to make a difference, but I need YOUR help! Why is this important? Care for Wild Rhino and Kruger National Park have a secret programme that rescues baby rhinos whose mothers have been killed by poachers. They rehabilitate, rewild, and release these vulnerable creatures, with intensive security and protection. Quick rescue is crucial because, without their mothers, these calves are doomed to die from starvation, dehydration, or predator attacks. My challenge This year: I am taking on an extraordinary challenge. I will volunteer for 14 days at a rhino rescue centre, working up to 14 hours a day. My tasks will include: Caring for and maintaining the boma for young orphaned rhinos. Monitoring new rhino calves born in the protected area. Recording and registering essential information on EarthRanger and Cybertracker during game drives. Attending educational lectures on conservation and management. Participating in adventurous activities such as night rides with K9 patrol, care, and daily river walk patrols. How you can help: I can’t do this alone. I need to raise donations to support this life-saving work. Although I could simply donate from my couch, I want to give back to nature by volunteering. However, more funds are needed to save these baby rhinos. My trip, volunteer work, and personal donation are step one, and with your help, we can raise €5000 to: - Adopt at least 2 baby rhinos for 17 months. - Rescue, rewild, and release these baby rhinos. All donations above the set amount will be used for additional adoptions of baby rhinos. The more we can save together, the more we can give back! Porto Alegre's Flood: Soccer Fields, Supermodel, and Elon Musk Did you know that the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was roughly the size of 10 soccer fields? I thought that was quite big until I learned that the flooded area in Porto Alegre, Brazil, is the size of 5,000 soccer fields. For my Dutch friends, imagine Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Eindhoven city centers all underwater. For my American friends, imagine the majority of all fast food restaurants in the entire USA under water, or Manhattan. So far, this devastating flood has impacted over 2 million people across 446 neighborhoods, and it keeps getting worse. 😔 - Over half a million people lost their homes and are displaced - Almost 100 thousand people lost their homes and are staying in provisional shelters - Over 10 thousand animals have been rescued but animal death count is unclear Supermodel Gisele Bündchen, who is from this region, summarizes it in a minute: https://lnkd.in/egSWPhzi Elon Musk is stepping up with free internet access through Starlink. Rodrigo Torres, one of our amazing volunteers at the M4A Foundation, based in Porto Alegre, has been tirelessly working on the ground in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The state is grappling with severe floods that have impacted more than half of its cities, with some completely devastated. Hundreds of thousands have lost their homes, and the full extent of the damage is still unfolding. Despite facing personal challenges, he has been part of the rescue operations, helping those affected, and is now assembling a reconstruction project to provide free architectural projects and construction materials to those who have lost their homes. We, in New Zealand, understand this devastation all too well. Last year we faced Cyclone Gabrielle, the most significant weather event our country has seen this century. It reminded us that climate change is not a distant threat, but a present reality. This is a call to action. Let’s come together to support the people of Rio Grande do Sul. Major flooding has recently devestated Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state in Brazil. I lived in southern Brazil for several years, so this news has hit really close to home. Porto Alegre has a population of 1.3 million people, and reports are saying that 80% of the population does not have running water. Every dollar you and I donate is worth 5 Brazilian Reais, which can go a long way in purchasing water, sanitary supplies, and other valuable materials to aid those are suffering. To put it into perspective, here are some of the things you can buy with $5 in southern Brazil: -15 liters of water (4 gallons) -17 bars of soap -5kg bag of rice (11 lbs) -16 rolls of toilet paper -16 tubes of toothpaste -80 pads -20 diapers Please consider donating to an organization that is assisting in relief efforts, whether that is your church, the charity listed in the post below, or another one of your choice.
