Below a summary of CSERC's engagement with Australia's draft Sustainable Ocean Plan.
C-SERC researcher Prof Michael Fabinyi was pleased to participate in the Ocean Dialogue in Sydney on 10th October as part of the #GlobalNaturePositiveSummit. The Dialogue brought together First Nations people, representatives from all levels of government, ocean industries, researchers, non-government organisations and the community to discuss priorities for Australia's oceans. The day was focused on Australia's draft Sustainable Ocean Plan, which has recently been out for public comment. C-SERC researchers think the Plan sets a good tone, but is light on timelines and metrics, and also fails to centre food as a crucial part of human relations with the sea. See the C-SERC submission on the draft Sustainable Ocean Plan attached. A particular focus for the Ocean Dialogue was discussing how to address the two priority areas of collaboration and knowledge, including how to integrate diverse human interactions with the sea (food, culture, recreation, spirituality, science, tourism, energy, mining, etc) into oceans management.

🌊 Why protect the Ocean? So the Ocean continues to protect us! Europe’s Ocean scientists launch advice for governments 🌍 Today leading European Ocean scientists launched Navigating the Future VI (NFVI) today, a publication which provides governments, policymakers and funders with robust, independent scientific advice, focusing on the critical role the Ocean plays in the wider Earth system. 🤝 Navigating the Future VI proposes the marine (natural and social) science research we need to help us address the challenges facing the planet, and with whom we need to collaborate to find solutions. 🍀 It focuses on four main themes: #Ocean and #People, Ocean and #Climate, Ocean and #Freshwater and Ocean and #Biodiversity. 👨👩👧👦 This is a flagship publication of the European Marine Board IVZW, an independent non-governmental advisory body that represents more than 10,000 marine scientists across Europe. NFVI was written by European Ocean scientists representing all EMB Member organisations (at kick off in 2022), spanning a wide range of backgrounds, disciplines and career levels. 🗣️ Join the conversation using #NFVIOcean #NFVIOcean #NavigatingTheFutureVI #OceanScience #MarinePolicy #Sustainability #ClimateAction #EuropeanMarineBoard You can find the publication here 👇 https://lnkd.in/gyGRxEga

Aquatic Living Resources is a journal published under the Diamond open access model, supported by sponsorship from two leading marine science organisations Ifremer (l’institut français de recherche entièrement dédié à la connaissance de l’océan – the French Research Institute Dedicated Entirely to Knowledge of the Ocean) and IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement - the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development) The sponsorship means that all papers are freely available without subscription or publication fees for authors. Publishing pioneering research that supports a number of United Nations sustainable development goals, the impact of the journal’s transition to #OpenAccess is significant. The next steps for this transition are to scale the publication to meet the needs of a discipline growing in criticality. Funding secured to create a new Coastal & Inland Waters Heritage Science Facility! 🌊 The project aims to use the specialist expertise of marine and maritime research at the University of Southampton to accelerate the development of technological solutions to climate change. 🌍 Project leader and one of our SMMI Deputy Directors, Professor Fraser Sturt, explains: “Climate change means our oceans are warming, storms are becoming more frequent and coastal and river flooding are more likely. This poses a threat to the future of many vulnerable heritage sites which lie in the sea just off our shores, in waterways and submerged in lakes. “These sites can unlock hidden histories – telling us about how people once lived, how they moved and migrated, traded, and shared ideas and sadly also where conflict arose. However, the sites are also often difficult to explore due to shallow waters or rocky inlets.” Provided by The UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the £2M package will help fund 3D scanning technology and remotely operated vehicles to explore our waters and preserve maritime heritage sites - including shipwrecks, historic ports, and ancient dwellings – in millimetre scale detail. 🔎 Find out more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/evxFg6gA

In the PREFIGURE EU project KIT researchers – Georgia Alexandri from ITAS and her colleagues from the Institute for Regional Science – explore together with European partners how factors like housing inequalities and energy vulnerability inhibit a just green transition. 🏠 🚧♻️ Research shows that households with low-income and a lack of access to information about available technologies are more prone to living in energy-inefficient housing and poor living conditions, including a higher vulnerability to extreme weather events and displacement. Therefore, the PREFIGURE project studies local political and social innovation efforts in seven countries. During the research process, they accompany 14 “prototypes of change” across Europe to highlight the dynamics of innovation in the context of a just green transition. 🌱🏡 The researchers from ITAS and the Institute for Regional Science look at two of those “prototypes”: ✅ In the city of Karlsruhe, they jointly study the contribution of the Karlsruhe Energy and Climate Protection Agency (Karlsruher Energie- und Klimaschutzagentur) in the Waldstadt district. ✅ The second case study is the municipal initiative “Housing Thessaloniki,” which transforms 30 municipal buildings into efficient housing for vulnerable groups. #oceansinthenews The UN Ocean Decade white papers published by UNESCO Ocean are now available to download, with each of the 10 comprehensive documents focussing on a specific Ocean Decade challenge. Each paper highlights the resources, infrastructure, partnerships, capacity development, technology solutions necessary and strategic recommendations to drive collaborative efforts. The UN Ocean Action Decade (2021 - 2030) places science at the core of the paradigm shift, increasing its uptake to inform policy shifts and action roadmaps. Recognising the need to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health to improve conditions for the sustainable development of the ocean, seas and coasts, the Ocean Decade framework aims to deliver ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. 199 projects have applied for funding in the first round of NordForsk's call on Sustainable Development of the Arctic. 36 of them, representing 18 per cent of the applications, have now been invited to the second round. Kristin Andersen is Special Advisor at NordForsk and responsible for the Arctic call. She says: “We are very pleased to see so many applications and that as many as nine countries are represented from across the Nordic region, Canada and America. This shows the great relevance of the theme for the entire Arctic region. We also see that there is great breadth in the themes addressed by the applications.” The research area is a collaborative effort between Norges forskningsråd, Research Council of Finland | Suomen Akatemia, Independent Research Fund Denmark, Research Council Faroe Islands, Vetenskapsrådet / Swedish Research Council and Formas, a Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, Greenland Research Council, Rannís - The Icelandic Centre for Researchwith funding from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation - Iceland, National Science Foundation (NSF), Canada Research Coordinating Committee, and NordForsk.
