👧 For the first time ever, today the Bonn Climate Change Conference will host an expert dialogue on the disproportionate effects that climate change is having on children 📨 Together with Omnia El Omrani, MD from Climate Cares - Imperial College London and with support from partners in Azerbaijan and Brazil from the Global Mental Health Action Network, United for Global Mental Health provided a submission to the UN Climate Change detailing how climate change is disproportionately impacting the mental health of children across the world. Why am I going to Footprint+? Among all the very good reasons, is the largely unreported way the changing climate is affecting our behaviour - ie boys who experienced 2012's Storm Sandy in utero saw a 60 fold increased risk of ADHD. Girls saw a 20 fold increase in anxiety and a 30 fold increase in depression. The study reveals that 16% of American adults experience symptoms of psychological distress related to climate change, and while moderate distress can promote collective climate action, high levels of anxiety may hinder engagement. As extreme weather events increase, so do the mental health impacts. Communities of color, low-income individuals, and young people are disproportionately affected, facing heightened levels of anxiety and depression. For the near-six months I have worked in the water sector, I've personally witnessed how environmental changes disproportionately affect people, but especially our youth and particularly those from marginalized communities. On this #InternationalYouthDay, we may celebrate the incredible strength and resilience of youth all around the world. But let's not forget the silent battles the youths still have to fight due to climate change. Climate change isn't just an environmental issue; it's a mental health crisis for the future generations. From rising temperatures, extreme heat weather, and environmental degradation, young people are continuously forced to experience heightened anxiety, depression, and trauma.
