Don't feel ready to apply for Data Analyst jobs? Still build a portfolio. Why? First... Each project you build and add to your portfolio get you in the rhythm of the day-to-day job. It's never too early to start getting that experience. Next... As you go through building those projects, there will be knowledge gaps that appear. This is the most efficient way to target your learning and make sure you get to where you want to, fast. Finally... The truth is, you won't ever feel 100% ready. Don't aim to meet every requirement on a job description. If you tick off 70%, you're in a good place. The benefit of building a portfolio as you go means when you decide to start applying, you then don't have to go about building a portfolio from scratch. All you need to do is clean up your existing portfolio and you're ready to go.

“How can I get a data analyst job if I don’t have any experience?” This is a question I get a lot, so let’s talk about it. First, EVERY DATA ANALYST had to start from zero at some point. Every single one of us. Nobody is born with experience. And if you’re going for an entry-level position that pays an entry-level salary, most of the people you’re competing with have never worked as a data analyst. However, just because you don’t have job experience doesn’t mean you don’t have experience. If you’ve taken courses to learn the skills, practiced those skills, built good projects, and worked to become the best data analyst you can be, that is valuable analytical experience. If you have experience working in a specific job sector (finance, ecommerce, healthcare, etc.), that is valuable industry experience. Focus on leveraging the analytical experience you get from learning with projects, and leveraging whatever work experience you have by highlighting transferable skills and industry knowledge. Let me stress: as you’re trying to get your first job as a data analyst, you’re not competing with people who have years of experience as a data analyst. How can I get a data analyst job with no experience? Your best option is to get an internship somewhere you want to work and convert that into an offer. That assumes you have the skills from school or self-study but no work experience. Many schools also have work-study programs and real world projects where students are placed with a company that gives them a problem to work on. If you're in the process of reviewing school options, you might favor one that has such well-established programs in place. Look for faculty that have good relationships with companies with which they have run past projects. You can also enter sponsored hackathons and case competitions. Basically, you're looking for opportunities to showcase your skills to people in a position to hire or recommend you. You should also work on the demand side of the equation. Publish content that showcases projects you've worked on. Don't have a project? Make one up and find public data to use. Then show others how to perform that analysis. Share a github repo. You'll not only increase your odds of getting a job once you're in the interview process. You'll draw demand from employers looking for your skills. #internships #dataanalystjobs

Imagine you can fast forward to landing a data analyst job. (Sadly you can’t, but imagine.) How do you make sure to kill it and be not a good, but a GREAT data analyst? • Get used to taking a lot of notes! (Important during onboarding and for meetings) • Get comfortable working with and asking questions to stakeholders, not just your boss! • Learn everyday! (Spending even 20 minutes a day working through a course will accelerate your growth as an analyst and help you find new ways to solve problems) • Spend a lot of time early on getting incredibly familiar with the database(s) and data you work with! (This includes table structure, industry knowledge, and more) • Address weaknesses early! (You aren’t going to get everything right off the bat, and that’s okay! Address any weak points and ask questions early to be the most confident data analyst you can be! • Keep track of achievements! (This is important to kick the imposter syndrome, and will help you for those end of year meetings) • Be kind to yourself! (If you do all of the above, you should be well on your way to being an A+ analyst)

Network, Network and Network. Meet and connect with people in the data industry both online and at events. Building relationships can lead to new opportunities. 5. Interview effectively by highlighting your problem solving skills and real world experience. Use specific projects to demonstrate how you analyze data, find insights and explain things clearly. 6. I was asked what kind of projects I should work for getting a data analyst job. So, When it comes to building your portfolio, remember that quality is always greater than quantity. For becoming a data analyst, it's essential to select projects that align with your interests, showcase a variety of skills, and tell a compelling story about your capabilities. If you want to work in supply chain industries find the data related to supply chain and work on that. (Kaggle is the best resource for data) But a well-crafted portfolio is more than just a collection of works. It should showcase your journey as a data analyst and highlight the unique value you bring to the table. By regularly updating your portfolio, you can demonstrate your most recent work and improvements in your skills.
