It is about Scaling up and mainstreaming seed systems interventions
We do not want to merely implement a project; we wish to catalyse change and scale up. Fresh from Uganda, we conducted the third regional workshop for the Benefit-sharing Fund (BSF) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. It was great to support the Alliance Bioversity CIAT with the three formidable National Focal Points of the Treaty from Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. The workshop retrospectively analysed the past 10 years of the countries’ PGRFA programme context, challenges, and achievements--- and then envisioned a 10-year goal. We then drew a pathway for scaling up and mainstreaming, including the needed partnerships and alliances, towards achieving the 10-year ambition. 💬 "Farmers in my country don't understand why, after more than 20 years of #EU membership, direct payments are the lowest. We do not see any objective reasons for this. This injustice must end immediately," said Acting Minister of Agriculture Kazys Starkevičius during #AGRIFISH Council in Brussels. 📌 He stressed that the CAP must be strong, distinct, simplified, backed by a sufficient budget, farmer-oriented, helping to ensure the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, resilience to crises, and sustainability. Driving Innovation and Collaboration for Africa's Agricultural Future Our #EUAgency plays a critical role in fostering collaboration among International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) members, including OAPI and ARIPO in #Africa. This collaboration enables the sharing of expertise, resources, and regulatory frameworks that ensure the protection and innovation of plant varieties across the continent. It is through this network of cooperation that new plant varieties, tailored to Africa’s unique agricultural challenges, can be developed and protected, driving agricultural productivity and food security. Without continuous investment in breeding new plant varieties and the support of organizations like CPVO, OAPI, and ARIPO, Africa's agricultural productivity would stagnate, leaving millions vulnerable to hunger and economic instability. Let’s push forward with plant innovation—because it’s the key to feeding not just Africa, but the world. 🌱🚀 #PlantInnovation #SustainableAgriculture #CPVO #UPOV #OAPI #ARIPO #AgriResearch #ResilientFoodSystems #FeedingAfrica #FoodSecurity #AgricultureTransformation #FutureOfFarming #ClimateResilience #BiodiversityInAgriculture

Two Agro-Dialogue events were held in Bishkek and Osh, #Kyrgyzstan, between February and March. The events, hosted by the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry and partly funded by IFAD, aimed to connect farmers and entrepreneurs to promote market-oriented partnerships, sustain market milk, meat and honey value chains and ultimately open up to exports. Over 500 farmers, exporters, processors, representatives from the financial sector and foreign institutional delegates attended the events. The Government was represented by the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, Akylbek Zhaparov. A follow-up event is currently foreseen on the 2nd of April around the 2024 Agro-Forum led by the #WorldBank, that will target Institutions and international development agencies, to scale up the dialogue at the national policy level. Speakers will discuss the national agro-industrial sector’s long-term vision and development areas, and which actions should be put in place to mitigate climate change within the #SDGs framework. The B2B events fall under the “Public-Private-Producers Partnerships Development” objectives of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)-funded Access to Markets Project (#ATMP), and support the partnership building between the target communities, international funding entities and the National Government Institutions. The Project aims to raise incomes and enhance economic growth in Kyrgyzstan's pastoralist communities while facilitating smallholder livestock farmers' products into markets. #IFAD #APIU #sustainability #internationaldevelopment #pasture #livestock #sustainabledevelopment #inclusivemarkets #equitablemarkets https://lnkd.in/gsAsEiZ4 Antje Grawe Chakib N.
