🏆 Turning Competition into Impact 🌎 Thrilled to announce that together with, Theo DUVERNET, we are organizing a UK Billiard Tournament at Hilbert College as part of our Sports Event Management course. This unique experience offers us the chance to take the lead and create an event from scratch. It’s a challenge that will teach us invaluable lessons. 🎯 Our Goal: The tournament is not just about competition—it’s a requirement of the course that we have a sponsor and a charity supporting the cause. After careful consideration, we’re leaning towards supporting #Movember, a charity related with men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health. 🛠️ The Challenge: As exchange students without a strong network in New York State, finding sponsors and securing partnerships with local charities will be challenging. The task requires us to build connections and communicate our vision effectively. 🔄 What’s Next: We’re currently reaching out to potential charities and building our marketing strategy. Once both are finalized, we’ll be launching the promotional campaign to promote our event. Stay tuned for updates as we make progress. Any advice or ideas to help us along this journey would be appreciated! 🙏 #EventManagement #Movember #CharityEvent #LearningByDoing #Management #NewYork

Does your passion show, when you show up? Choosing to expand my network leads to great opportunities to hear from local ‘celebrities’, some of whom like NBN Television Newsreader Natasha Beyersdorf, is a wonderful contributor to our community! Natasha is invited to many events and we were fortunate to have her attend this month's Newcastle Business Club lunch as our special guest. She shared her passion for her job and her community involvement, and how important the role of local media is in sharing local stories. Add to this her commitment to local charitable organisations (even competing in the 'Dancing with the Stars' fundraiser for the Cancer Council!) and it's no surprise that she is admired by many. As a new member of the community, I shared with her how useful the local news has been for us to understand how Newcastle ticks. (...and she's much taller in real life than on the telly! 😁) It was also fabulous to catch up with like-minded business people, including Clare Edwards (FIML), Elizabeth Behne-Smith, Liz Murray, Josh Lawlor from Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, Catherine Raftos from Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), Simon Borham from Eastview Advisory, and many more. How do you show up, when you're in a business networking setting? Do you have conversations about business, or do you explore the passions of your fellow attendees? Best possible results are driven from a point of passion! If you'd like to explore how that could benefit your business, let's talk! #optimism #bestpossible #passion

When I asked Ben Fogle if he had any advice about climbing Kilimanjaro, he said, "Don’t do it!!!" Now I know what he meant! It’s by far the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. It was also an incredible experience that took us through many highs and a few lows. When you are three miles up in the sky, there’s not a lot of oxygen around! You are void of any energy, and that little voice starts speaking to you. You know, the one that says, "This is too hard, you can’t do this. You’re too old, you’re too tired." It’s so easy to give up meters away from success. We all kept going, simply focusing on the next step ahead, avoiding looking up to see how far there was to go. The support team was incredible. They kept singing to help raise our spirits and shouting out words of encouragement every step of the way. “You climb the mountain not for the world to see you but for you to see the world.” Our porters and guides this week certainly helped us do this! On the journey, I took away so many things from this incredible group of people and loved the core values they follow: 1. Love changing people’s lives 2. Lead with service 3. Embrace the bizarre (work outside the box or get rid of the box altogether!) 4. Create happiness and community 5. Do the right thing There are some great lessons and messages for our own businesses right there. Like anything else we do, getting to the top can be such an emotional experience. However, there was an underlying reason for the trek, and that was to raise money for research into Motor Neuron Disease. We’ve managed to raise nearly half of our original target. To all those who have donated, thank you so much for your amazing support! It will make a BIG difference for someone out there. What an inspiring MasterClass with Samantha Devlin from Cancer Research UK! 🌟 Diving deep into the power of an audience-first approach, we explored why focusing on lifetime value and building collaborative strategies across our portfolios is essential for growth. Here's one fact we shared today from Supporter View: For each additional product a supporter engages with—whether that’s regular giving, cash donations, mid or major gifts, event fundraising, sponsorship, or emergency support—it significantly boosts their lifetime value. The data reveals that the median lifetime value jumps 6.4X for those giving via two products instead of a single product! If you needed a business case to increase team collaboration, hopefully this insight from Supporter View illustrates the transformative impact of building diverse, multi-product relationships with supporters and designing the next best ask - together. By prioritising these opportunities for engagement, we can maximise both supporter satisfaction and the long-term impact of our work. Looking forward to the next session face to face tomorrow in Sydney! If you’re interested in learning more about integrating these insights into your work, please reach out. #SupporterFirst #LifetimeValue #FundraisingGrowth

#WednesdayWonderings When I’m asked about why I choose to work in corporate, this is my standard answer: “I want to make a difference in people’s lives. I don’t want to work for a charity or not-for-profit (NFP) because I don’t want to be focused on one thing and I want to be able to make a decent salary. I think Government is too slow and hamstrung by politics. So that leaves corporates - with money to do stuff and I can make a good living”. This statement is exactly what’s wrong with how charities and NFPs are expected to behave. They’re expected to have a huge impact, but operate on skeleton funding. Last week I had the opportunity to watch #unCharitable hosted by PwC Australia This doco-movie completely changed my opinion and understanding of how NFPs should be run. Dan Pallotta tells his story of running a multimillion dollar, American-wide successful charity that was destroyed by media criticism of the cost of ‘overheads’. He breaks down how NFPs are held to a different moral standard to for-profits whilst being expected to do so much more. He gives us the economics of how spending money on salaries, plane tickets, offices, marketing etc allows charities to raise so much more money and help more people - yet are socially ridiculed. It includes heartbreaking stories of people like you and me doing amazing things, only to be pulled apart for the sake of a good media story. It then tells us how we have to change our thinking, focus and scrutiny of charities and NFPs away from ‘what’s their overhead’ to be what’s their dream? What’s the potential? What’s their impact? If we can’t pay the best minds, thinkers and problem-solvers to work for NFPs, we won’t entice them. If we don’t entice the best minds, thinkers and problem-solvers to work in NFPs and charities, we won’t solve anything. I was humbled and honoured to watch this movie - and had my opinion changed too.
