Peters et al. explore assistive technologies developed in the HPML while providing an empathic framework for other research groups to follow in their paper 'User-driven product development: Designed by, not designed for'. The current state of function and design of accessible assistive technology is lacking, evidenced by low usability and high abandonment rates by people with disabilities (PwD). A significant contributing factor to these negative outcomes is a lack of user-centered design or user-opinion in the product development. The Human Performance and Mobility Maker Lab (HPML) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a new facility dedicated to developing assistive technology by PwDs. Rather than being excluded from the design and innovation process, PwDs are the primary drivers of innovation at the HPML. The HPML’s the central tenet is ‘Designed by, not designed for’. The purpose of this paper is to explore various assistive technologies developed in the HPML while providing an empathic framework for other research groups to follow in integrating PwDs into the development and design of assistive technology. A Good Life is an innovative tool for visualising the lives of people with complex support needs (most likely living in supported care environments). It reframes conversations about support, shifting the focus to lived experience and revealing opportunities for people with disabilities to lead richer and fuller lives. A Good Life was developed through a joint effort between Northcott Innovation, the UTS School of Design and Parallel Lines. Learn more about the A Good Life tool now and how we need more funding to make this available broadly throughout the disability and aged care sector. https://lnkd.in/gZNDtWgC

For the 2nd year in a row, our Testing Center sponsored an Accessible Proctoring Conference, bringing in participants from all over California and other states, to learn how to proctor accommodated exams for all students, not just disabled students. Primary objective was to have participants learn how to go beyond what is minimally required for disabled test candidates, while striving to provide what can be universally provided for all test candidates. Topics included: Empowering Inclusive Education: Leveraging Accessibility Tools in Instructional Materials; Empowering Success: Supporting Low Vision Students in Testing Environments; Navigating the Legal and Ethical Landscape of Accessibility in Academic Testing; Roundtable Discussion: Exploring the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Disability in Accessible Testing; Last Minute Conversion Using Technology and more. To lighten the intense sessions, but still in keeping with universal access as a theme, a highlight was providing participants an opportunity to try out wheelchair rugby chairs, and learn about the adaptive sports offered at the campus.
