Here is a telling example of how strong land seismic noise is caused by the very near surface. Note that the sources are at depth, so the noise here is mainly from the receivers. This example is a bit unusual in that nearly all the distortion is in the upper 9m--often the distortion is caused by the upper 10-50m.
