When putting away outdoor items such as patio furniture this fall, be careful to look for egg masses from invasive species such as spotted lanternfly (SLF). SLF will lay their eggs on any surface. These egg masses look like smears of mud. If left to overwinter they will hatch in the spring. If you see SLF egg masses, take photos, scrape them into a plastic bag and report them to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. For more information about SLF egg masses, click this link: https://bit.ly/38TXN38

Today is the first day of spring. During this season, the weather warms up and we start to head outside more. There are several patents related to spring, and some are especially helpful with the warmer temperatures. This invention is perfect for a spring picnic. Eileen Trinkner was granted a patent in 1982 for her combined picnic bag and tablecloth (U.S. Patent No. 4337812). Her invention allows for efficient organization and transportation of silverware, plates, food and drink, while also serving as a table cover. Another invention perfect for a picnic is insect repellent. U.S. Patent No. 5589181A was issued in 1996 to Franz Bencsits. Spring is also the time for blooming flowers, and blooming flowers need water. Peter H. Seckel invented the kink resistant hose for spraying water (U.S. Patent No. 5682925A). The hose has connector end fittings and displaced internal ribs to prevent compression or kinking. Water is the soul of the Earth - W.H. Davies . Indeed. Water is essential to life. It is one of several precious elements that we require to live. Hence the importance of preserving it and avoiding its waste. While most of our planet is made of water, a lot of it is already polluted by us or simply not a fresh resource that we could make use of. So next time you are performing your dental hygiene, turn off your tap for those few minutes while you brush your teeth. Or if you notice a small leak in your home, fix it. If you can, use less detergents/soaps or choose ones that have a less aggressive impact on water and soils. Small daily gestures to manage water resources that will help us secure our future! . We never know the worth of water till the well is dry - Thomas Fuller . Here is a short poem by Rudyard Kipling that emphasizes the importance of preserving water: Drink if you are thirsty, Water is the best. You’ll feel cool and tasty, Water beats the rest. Though it seems quite plain, Water is our treasure. Save it like a gain, It’s a source of pleasure . 1moAvoid someone being in this situation and looking around thinking "gosh I hope no one caught that on their camera" by using dyed ice melt or rock salt. That way walkers can SEE that ice melt is down, and to be careful. Or just keep them guessing with colorless rock salt, and have your camera ready.
