At two demonstration sites—the Moghra Oasis and Nuweiba—innovative technologies and climate-resilient practices are being implemented to combat water scarcity and soil infertility.   And this is just the start. Project Report on the Climate Vulnerability Assessment of the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras This Ifugao-led study is a climate vulnerability assessment of the rice terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The assessment establishes why local communities value the terraces, and how these values, deeply rooted in indigenous knowledge, are impacted by climate change. The end goal is for communities to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity as they position to preserve and protect their cultural heritage. Data was gathered by several focus group discussions among farmers in Nagacadan Hungduan, Mayoyao, Bangaan and Batad. This approach ensures the collection of critical data that truly reflects the lived experiences and needs of the indigenous Ifugao people. The assessment utilizes modern climate science and indigenous knowledge, as both realms of understanding are complementary and necessary to address the climate crisis more effectively. The Ifugao Rice Terraces confront a web of climate challenges such as intensified typhoons, erratic precipitation patterns, prolonged droughts and increasing temperatures, which pose imminent risk of soil erosion, reduced crop yield or crop loss, landslides, and structural damage to the terraces. This threatens their ecological integrity, agricultural productivity, amplifies existing vulnerabilities, and can jeopardize the sustainability of this cultural landscape. Niamey, the capital of Niger is one of the warmest places on earth and undergoes unprecedented population growth. It is therefore particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.   In the Niamey Climate Forest Project, VITO developed - in close collaboration with the African Center of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD), the city of Niamey and local stakeholders - an effective strategy against heat stress with a science-based tree planting campaign and smart financing.   We used our urban microclimate models to prove the crucial role of urban trees as an effective tool against heat stress. 🌍 The Great Green Wall: A Green Beacon of Hope for Africa and the World 🌱 Did you know that one of the largest environmental projects in the world is currently underway in Africa? The Great Green Wall is an ambitious initiative not only aimed at reforesting vast areas but also symbolizing the collective fight against desertification and climate change. 🌿 The project, launched in 2007 by the African Union, aims to plant a massive 8,000 km long and 15 km wide wall of trees across the Sahel region, stretching from Senegal to Djibouti. This "green wall" is designed to stop the spread of the Sahara Desert while restoring fertile soil, water resources, and habitats for local communities. 🌳🌍 So far, the impact has been incredible: 🌱 Millions of trees have already been planted in countries like Senegal. 🌾 These efforts are improving soil quality, increasing food production, and creating jobs. 🌍 It’s not just an environmental project – it's providing economic benefits to communities, preventing land degradation, and combating poverty. https://lnkd.in/eUPhtwFZ #EarthshotPrize. #BBC As #FT reports today ‘The global economy is losing up to $25tn a year because sectors such as agriculture, energy and fishing fail to account for how their actions fuel interconnected crises in nature, climate and human health, a landmark international biodiversity science policy report found’ The report, approved by #IPBES member states in Namibia on Monday after three years of work by 165 scientists, estimated that unaccounted-for costs from current business practices were between $10tn and $25tn annually, equivalent to a quarter of global GDP. These costs arise when industries fail to factor in the damage their operations cause across systems. Delaying action by even a decade could double the costs of addressing biodiversity loss, while acting immediately could unlock $10tn in business opportunities and support 395mn jobs globally by 2030, according to a second #IPBES report, published on Wednesday

[News] RESULT Asia-Pacific framework launches to restore and sustain 100 million hectares of degraded landscapes RESULT Asia-Pacific, a regional restoration programme framework was established to immediately support 20 countries across Asia and the Pacific in their efforts to restore and sustainably manage 100 million hectares of degraded forests, agricultural land, urban areas and other landscapes across the region. This will in turn support countries in fulfilling their #restoration commitments under the three Rio Conventions on climate change, combating desertification and #biodiversity. The framework, supported by 38 partners in total, is currently led by the FAO , UN Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), ITTO | International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and IUCN. The launch event took place in Bangkok, Thailand, bringing together participants from governments, investors, civil society, Indigenous peoples organisations and other stakeholders.
