🌍 The Urgent Need for Public Health Advocacy in Africa and Beyond Public health advocacy is not just an option; it's a necessity for the well-being of communities in Africa and across the globe. As we navigate the challenges of our ever-changing world, from pandemics to rising health disparities, the role of public health in safeguarding our future has never been more critical. 1. Access to Quality Healthcare: Millions of people across Africa still face barriers to accessing basic healthcare services. The lack of infrastructure, limited resources, and inadequate healthcare systems mean that preventable diseases continue to claim countless lives. Public health advocacy is essential to push for policies that expand access to quality healthcare, ensuring that no one is left behind. 2. Disease Prevention and Control: Recent outbreaks like Ebola and COVID-19 have shown us how interconnected our world is. These crises have also revealed the weaknesses in our healthcare systems. By investing in public health initiatives such as vaccination campaigns, health education, and sanitation programs, we can prevent future outbreaks and protect entire communities. 3. Addressing Health Inequalities: Health disparities remain a significant issue, especially for marginalized groups. Advocacy efforts can shine a light on these inequalities and work towards creating policies that provide equal access to healthcare, regardless of socioeconomic status, gender, or location. 4. Promoting Mental Health Awareness: Mental health often takes a backseat in conversations about health, yet it’s a vital aspect of our well-being. In Africa, the stigma around mental health issues often prevents individuals from seeking help. Public health advocacy can challenge these stigmas, promote awareness, and push for the integration of mental health services into primary care. 5. Collaboration for a Healthier Future: Public health is not the responsibility of a single individual, organization, or government. It requires a collaborative approach, involving policymakers, healthcare professionals, community leaders, and individuals like you and me. By advocating for public health, we can create partnerships that drive change on a local, national, and global scale. It’s time for us all to become advocates for public health. Whether it’s by raising awareness, supporting healthcare policies, or simply educating ourselves and others, every effort counts. Together, we can build a healthier, more resilient world. #PublicHealthAdvocacy #AfricaHealth #GlobalHealth #HealthcareEquity #DiseasePrevention #MentalHealthAwareness #HealthForAll

Planning and research go hand in hand. Research gives us the right information that is required to plan in the various fields. The WHO has six blocks that build up a health system. This week we have engaged in research around these building blocks to check the progress and the gaps therein for eye health. The research has led us to engage Directors of hospitals, district health representatives, NGOs working around eye health, the patients that recieve the services and the profit and non for profit institutions. At the end of the day this Eye Health Systems Assessment will give the right information that is needed for advocacy, planning, decision making for the country. Looking forward to the report of this research that will give clear direction for eye health in the country. #WHO #6buildingblocks #research #planning #eyehealth #decisionmaking #eyengos #advocacy

This thursday we organized a session at the CSPF during the World Bank #SpringMeetings2024 entitled "Harnessing the Power of African Parliamentarians and CSOs to Efficiently Address Communities Health Needs". Our message to The World Bank and #IDA was simple : "We urge you to increase your attention to human capital in #IDA21 by prioritizing Health and nutrition qualitative fundings based on our communities needs. To do so, it is important that you insist on including MPs and CSOs from the beginning of your various projects to ensure their meaningful engagement, and improve the impact of these projects through better accountability and transparency." Today, the Long Covid Cross Party Group (CPG) at the Scottish Parliament, alongside Long Covid Scotland, meets with Neil Gray, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care. Here are the points we are bringing to the Agenda 🦾 To highlight the struggles of those living with Long Covid. 🛣️ To seek urgent action on care pathways 🫥 How to address the crisis of patients giving up on seeking care 😷 To improve public health messaging: we desperately need a prevention strategy. Our minimum expectation is a no-quibble commitment to implementing the Scottish Parliament Long Covid Inquiry recommendations in full. — Progress has been alarmingly slow. It would defeat the whole point of an inquiry if the recommendations are not actioned. Accountability is critical. It’s time for policymakers to drive real, meaningful change. Let’s ensure the Long Covid community is heard and no longer overlooked. #LongCovid #Advocacy #ScottishParliament #HealthcareMatters

An important meeting today - it would defeat the whole point of a Covid inquiry if the recommendations aren't put in place: And the lack of public health messaging has been shocking to see. 🦠 People are still catching Covid, it's just not being as tested for ♿ Even 'mild' Covid can permanently disable you. 📈The harm of Covid is *cumulative*: Every infection does more permanent damage. 😷 Of all the preventative measures, masks are the simplest way to reduce infection and spread. #Covid #LongCovid #LongCovidScotland
